Hi I'm looking for information on my G. Grandfather Daniel Ryan born c 1840 in Tipperary. I'm not sure of the parish but I think it would have been in Clonoulty.

His parents were James Ryan and Mary Dwyer who were married in 1839 at Cashel & Emly. Clonoulty. He married Mary Devane in Sydney Australia in 1867.

Any information would be greatly appreciated

Regards Helen

  • Hi Helen, I searched for marriage for James Ryan and Mary Dwyer in 1839 in the Parish of Clonoulty Diocese of Cashel and Emly. Did you get that date from Tipperary Family History Research. Did you find Daniel on Shipping list of Tipperary people to Australia, mid 19 th century.

  • Hi Christina

Thankyou so much for your reply.

I found 2 marriages for James Ryan & Mary Dwyer in the National Library of Ireland, Clonoulty, Cashel & Emly. They were both on the same date 10 Feb 1839, one was at Doon & Castletown and the other was at Knockavilla so I'm not sure which would be correct, if either.

My information has been very limited, I have Daniel's death certificate which had parents unknown and birth just as Tipperary but I also have his marriage certificate and on this he has given his parents as James Ryan & Mary Dwyer.

Daniel married Ellen Devane and all the Devane's seem to have come from Clonoulty, Cashel & Emly and I have wondered if they knew each other before they emigrated to Australia.

I have found another James Ryan and Mary Dwyer who came to Australia and settled in Aubury NSW but I am confident these are not mine.

It's so frustratiing when there are so many with the same names especially when two are married on the same date in different places.

I have found several Daniel Ryan's on shipping lists and have looked at Peter Maddens list of Tipperary people coming to Australia and also on Ancestry. I have a Daniel Ryan who arrived on the Eastern Empire in 1862 who was brought out by John Teefy and he was from Birdhill. I seem to be gravitating towards him but without proof I just don't know.

I'm just in the process of doing a spreadsheet of different Ryan families coming to Australia from Peter Maddens list, from the same areas with the same parents to see if I can pick up a clue from that.

    Thanks again

    Helen

  • Helen, Doon and Castletown is also in the Diocese of Cashel and Emly. National Library records now on line free registersnli.i.e..
You have very good research done. I have roots in both parishes, so will look for more info.
Tipperary Family History Research do a great job for a small fee when they open again after the pandemic.

  • Helen,   Found the marriage  in Knockavilla as you said 10th Feb 1839, Witnesses Michael Ryan and Catherine Maher,   The addrees given for  Mary was  Gurrane, for James Synone/Sinone. Gurrane in Catholic parish of Knockavilla, civil parish Ballygriffin.

Yes there were Devanes in Clonoulty , but most of them were in the neighbouring parish of Boherlahan.

I could not access marriages in Doon yesterday on new site  registersnli.ie as baptisms kept coming up, but  will search for them again.

Let me know what you think and if you have questions.

  • Thanks so much Christina for all your help it's much appreciated.

Do you think it would be possible that the 2 marriages for James Ryan and Mary Dwyer are the same one. ? It just seems odd that two couples with the exact same names were married on the same date in different parish's.

I found 5 births for the couple in Knockavilla, but unfortunately I couldn't find Daniel's birth. I did a ten year search but couldn't find any for the couple in Doon & Castletown.

Is it possible that Daniel's name could have a different variation of spelling to what we would normally assume ?

I seem to have a lot of questions for you with not much concrete information but I'm finding it hard to know just where else to look.

    Thank you again

  • Hi again Helen, Daniel,s name would not have been changed but it is possible his baptism was not recorded, if he was born premature  or sickly the Doctor or nurse or relative would have given him conditional baptism.

Found the Marriage in Doon, Mary,s address given as Carnahalla which is on the border between parishes of Doon and parish of Cappawhite, also the border between Tipperaryand Limerick.  Ryan and Dwyer were the  most  popular names in the area. The witnesses were Martin Dwyer and  Patrick Ryan. There were no Teefy,s in Tipperary South Riding  in Griffiths Valuation, about 30  in North  Tipp.  Do you have DNA  done, there is a group on Facebook, The  Ryans of Tipperary and Limerick, very helpful group  Let me know what you think and if you have any questions

  • Many thanks Christina, I hadn't given a thought to Daniel's baptism not being recorded and didn't know about the various reasons.

I have had my DNA done and have matches to Daniel and John Devane and Ellen Devane nee Ryan the lowest is 12cm and the highest 406cm and lots of varying levels in between.

I will have a look at the Facebook page for The Ryans of Tipperary and Limerick, thankyou for that link

  • Helen  looked up Devane,s Co Limerick, only four in the county, John Devane in lot 26 in townland of Farnafranklin,  Patrick Teefy lot  6 same townland.

This townland just  over the border in Co Limerick, parish of Cappamore very near Doon.

Did the people you matched with on DNA give ypu any indication of where your ancestor was from.

Let me know how you get on.
