Hi - I am seeking a Tie-breaking Piece of Evidence.

Family Tradition holds that Peter O’Toole died in 1869
Annaduff parish records show the death of a Peter O’Toole on 11 July 1862
The Griffith’s Valuation of 1856 lists no Peter O’Toole as owning land (assume death prior to 1856?)

Peter O’Toole and Ann Nutley of Carrick, Leitrim, Ireland had the following children:
Mary Ann Reynolds nee O’Toole (of Manchester) b. 1810 d. 1895
William O’Toole (of Carrick) b. 1815 d. 1885
John O’Toole (of White Oaks) b. 1822 d. 1912
also Ellen, Anne, Elizabeth, and Cecily.

Luckily, Peter’s grandson, John O’Toole Reynolds, erected a tombstone at St. Mary’s Church Cemetery in Aghamore, Leitrim, Ireland. The tombstone lists Peter’s death year and age. Also shows that of Mary Ann and William. Unfortunately the death year is difficult to see in the only photo I have available of that tombstone viewable at www.IGP-web.com/IGPArchives/ire/leitrim/photos/tombstones/leitrim-annaduff-st-mary/index.html   The tombstone of interest is photo #19.

I would greatly appreciate a photo focused on the line containing the death year of Peter O’Toole or a rubbing of the same line.

Thanks for any help in resolving this conflict of dates.

  • Hi there,

I have asked my sister to go to the cemetery and take a photo of the headstone for you. She will be in that area in the next few weeks. All the best with your research!

    Kind regards,

    Teresa

  • Hi, my sister and her husband have just driven to the cemetery to look for Peter O'Toole's headstone. I have attached the 2 photos they took - the second photo is a close up. It shows Peter as having died in 1855 and mentiones that he was from Corrick (rather than Carrick), which is a part of Aughamore. (There's also a Corrick which is listed as part of Keshcarrigan). Hope this helps with the last piece of the jigsaw!

    Regards,

  • Hi, Teresa.
This is a very clear photo of the gravestone. Thank you so much!  The lead on Corrick Vs Carrick is a first for me. I will check on Aughamore vs. Annaduff.

Thanks you so very much for your kind efforts.

  • Hi,

You're very welcome. Would Corrick, Aughamore be most likely for Peter?

    Glad to help,

    Teresa
