Hi I'm looking to find any information on the parents and family of James Reynolds born February 2nd 1836 and baptised 21st February 1836 in Rosenalis parish church Co Laois. His father Michael Reynolds was born circa 1797-1800 and married Ann King circa 1823. Their first child Catherine was born September 1824 followed by Margaret 1828,Mary 1831,Ann 1833,James 1836,Patrick 1838 and Mary 1841. My direct decendant James moved to Dublin sometime post famine and married Mary Sheehan in 1870 in St Andrews parish church Rathmines. If my research is correct his parents died a month apart, Ann  22nd December 1878 at Drummond Co Laois and Michael 22nd January 1879 also at Drummond. Any further information you can supply would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Chris.

    Hi Chris,

The deaths of Anne and Michael in Drummond was notified by a John Jones, Drummond. There is a record on subscription site  www.rootsireland.ie of a John Jones who married in 1873. Possibly the same person.

Baptismal sponsors for James were Edward Gowan and Anne King, for Mary 1831 - Patrick Behan and Margaret Beech, for Anne 1833 - Samuel Gowan and Anne Behan.

Tithe Records - 1823 - 1837 do not have have any entry for Drummond. No record in Griffith's valuations for a Michael Reynolds in Drummond.

There are a number of entries in the town of Mountmellick for a Michael Reynolds.  www.askaboutireland/Griffith's

  • Hi,

many thanks for your reply. Yes John Jones was a son-in-law of Michael and Anne Reynolds. He married their daughter Anne in 1857. There is also a James Jones (who could be a brother of John) who married Mary another daughter of Michael in Oct 1864 at Rosenallis. Strangely his residence at the time of his marriage is given as Ballyshannon (Co Donegal ?) which seems quite a distance from Laois. Unfortunately to date I can't  find a marriage record for Michael and Anne which could prove useful if her father's name was recorded along with possibly a townland address. I am assuming she was a local lass and born somewhere in Laois.

    Hi Chris,

The "Ballyshannon" in the record for James Jones appears to be in County Kildare, not Donegal. It is in the Civil parish of Ballyshannon, Poor Law Union of Athy, Co. Kildare.

There is a baptism record in  subscription site - www.rootsireland.ie  for a Mary Anne Jones. Father: James Jones and Mother: Mary Reynolds.

Baptismal Sponsors: William Bermiongham and Catherine Brenan. Parish of Suncroft.

    Civil birth record attached>

  • Hi,

sorry don't know your first name. Much appreciate that information as it gives me some extra leads to follow up. Yes I was very dubious about the residence address as Ballyshannon but could not find anything on Google for Laois. Kildare makes much more sense as it's next door. So thank you once again for your invaluable help !
