Dia dhuit,

I'm trying to find the origins of my Grady/Burke origins and hope there may be someone who knows of them or has some ideas.

In an attempt to locate the place of origin of Dennis Grady and Ellen Burke, who came from Ireland to US in 1848-1850, I used the Tithe Aplotment for a possible location. Dennis and Ellen married in Ireland, abt 1845, had two children, Patrick – born abt 1846, and John – born abt 1848. The four of them travelled to the US and settled in Dover, NH. Why Dover? Probably because Ellen’s sister, Bridget, lived here. In tracing their records everything states Ireland as their origin, but does not specify a County or Townland. The first public record for the family is in the US Census for 1850. In that record Denis –age 22, Ellen-age 20,  Patrick-age 4, John-age 3, had Ireland as their place of birth. Richard Grady, age 8/12, was listed as born in NH. John Grady’s obituary in 1919 states, “Mr. Grady was born in Ireland but came to this country when about a year old.”

The family religion is Catholic.

In using the Tithe Aplotment I am using the names John Grady and Richard Burke, the names of Dennis and Ellen’s  father names that were listed in each of their death records. In all Ireland there are 28 Richard Burke listed and 105 John Grady’s listed. Below is a table of the counties where both these names were listed and the number of times listed.

County                         Richard Burke, no. times listed                            John Grady, No. times listed

Limerick                                            1                                                                        17

Galway                                              8                                                                          9

Cork                                                  2                                                                          3

Meath                                                1                                                                         3

Kilkenny                                           2                                                                          2

Westmeath                                      2                                                                           1

Tipperary                                         8                                                                          20

Waterford                                         2                                                                           5

Next each of the counties where both names were listed were checked for a listing in the same parish. Only the parish of Fiddown in Kilkenny listed both names; Richard Burke in the Townland of Dowling in 1828, and John  Grady in the Townland of Kilmanahin in 1828.  Kilkenny bordering on Waterford.

The Griifith Valuation was accomplished in Kilkenny in 1849-50. The name of Richard Burke is still listed in the Townland of Dowling. The name of John Grady is still listed in the Townland of Kilmanahin.

If anyone has information or ideas for further research of Dennis Grady and Ellen Burke, please let me know.

Thank you for having this site available.
