I am attempting to find information on a Patrick Meara who married Mary (unknown Maiden name) around (best guess) the year 1830. In 1832, they had a daughter whom they named Johanna. All of the U.S. records obtained regarding Johanna indicate that she was born in the year 1832 +/- 1 yr.  She later left Ireland for the United States in the late 1840's to early 1850's where she setteled on Long Island, New York.

A possible location of Sharragh, Dorrha, County Tipperary for Patrick Meara's residence/ death around 1878 was recently discovered but is certainly not confirmed. I cannot even say for sure that the family is actually from County Tipperary but reasearch shows that many Meara families resided in that area and I had to start somewhere.

Any additinal info regarding family, siblings etc. and location of possible residences would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for any efforts

  • Hi Seeker,
    This map shows Lorrha
    lorrha - Bing
To find the exact house will be difficult, you would need Patrick's fathers name.
There are quite a few townlands in Lorrha and quite a few Patrick Meara's.

I didn't see any other children but you may find them in Rootsireland site.....it's not free.

  • Hi Seeker, I'm descended from a Johanna Meara (born around 1832) in Ireland (not sure what county but have some possibilities) that ended up on Long Island around 1849, whose parents where Patrick and Mary Meara (I don't know Mary's maiden name or where they ended up, nor do I know of any siblings of Johanna).  Johanna Meara is my 3rd great grandmother. I'm blown away by all the information you've posted and would love to know your interest in Johanna.
I've connected with a 2nd cousin of my mother's the last few years (I hope this isn't you MW!) who is the only one other than my mother and I that I've found researching Johanna.  I just joined this sight after coming across your post so I'm unfamiliar with how this message board works but hope to talk to you soon.  My Johanna was married to Thomas White, a farmer.  I've got a lot more I nformation about their children but still haven't found solid information where they are from in Ireland, etc (I only discovered her maiden name about 2 years ago after requesting the death record of one of their daughters that died at 13).  I'm on Ancestry and have done my DNA, so has my mother, please let me know if you'd like to message over there as I think it could be easier. -SueIrish
