I am looking for information on my g-grandfather, Richard Dillon. His grave marker lists his birthdate as 12 Dec. 1853, Gurteen, Co. Galway. I believe he emigrated to Boston abt. 1870. His parents' names are unknown to me. He supposedly knew my g-grandmother in Ireland, but they married in San Francisco.
Her name is Ellen (Nellie) Coleman and her birthdate, according to her grave marker, is 15 Jan. 1854, also in Gurteen. I believe her parents were William Coleman and Ellen Carroll. I have found Ellen Carroll in the Boston area, but no trace of William in any US census. Her siblings, born in Ireland, are Margaret, Delia J., James J. and Patrick W. Coleman. They would have emigrated around 1865-1870? to Boston.
The name Gurteen, as a place of origin, has been passed down through the family, as well as Athenry. These are the only clues I have, and would appreciate any assistance you might give me.
Thank you,
Colette

Colette:
There is no townland in Co. Galway spelled Gurteen. There are five spelled Gorteen and another 17 townlands that start with Gorteen e.g. Gorteenacra, Gorteenboy, Gorteencahill etc. Go to http://www.seanruad.com to see all the possibilities. Out of these townlands only one, Gorteenacra, is in Athenry civil parish. I have no idea if this is the correct townland.
It looks like the Mormon Church has microfilmed church records for Athenry starting in 1858. You may want to look at film 0926217 to see if you can find some siblings of Richard or Ellen. The films have to be ordered online www.familysearch.org and sent to a local Mormon Family History Center.

Dear Roger,
Thank you very much for your reply. I had noticed Gorteenacra and wondered if it might be a connection. You have given me a place to start looking.

You may be looking for a variant of Dilleen orse Dillon common in the RC parishes called Ballymacward/Gurteen and Kiltullagh/Killimordaly! If you type in http://www.esatclear.ie/~jamesnd/ you might be able to access an old website with basic info on the Dilleen Family.
The RC Half parish called Gurteen includes several townlands including one called Gorteen and a small village called Gurteen with RC Church, Post Office and Public House/grocery business. In the 19th century all civil records for the modern RC half Parish of Gurteen are found in the Civil Parish of Cloonkeen Kerrill. All surviving RC records for Gurteen are kept in the parochial House in Ballymacward
Sincerely, James N. Dillon otherwise Dilleen

Hello Collette,
The following may be of interest
Re Richard Dillon: He was the third son of Richard & Bridget Dillon orse Dilleen of the townland of Shanballyeeshel, RC Parish of Gurteen/Ballymacward, Co. Galway. Richard Dillon Senior died May 4, 1864 age 66 years and his wife Bridget Dilleen (I don't know her maiden surname) died April 20, 1866 age 60. The two older brothers were Hubert and Tom and at least one sister, Bridget Dilleen who married Timothy Haverty of Cloonsheecahill in the neighbouring RC Parish of Kiltullagh/Killimordaly.
Re Ellen (Nellie) Dillon/formerly Coleman: Her parents, William Coleman and Ellen Coleman (formerly Ellen Carroll) lived in the Townland of Gortnalone North, RC Parish of Ballymacward/Gurteen. William died c. 1864 - 1866 and left Ellen a widow and a family to care for! She secured the tenancy of her husband's small farm but found it impossible to survive on it - so she emigrated to the USA and hopefully found a better place to rear her family.
I can email you backup details of most the above and in return would like to know how Ellen Coleman/Carroll and her family fared in the US! I write articles on Local History for the Gurteen magazine, St. Kerrill's Journal.
Sincerely,
James N. Dillon orse Dilleen.
