Looking for information about Dominic Gavan born circa 1831 had a brother called James born circa 1835. He was married to Amy. He was a cattle dealer and brought their family over to the uk on a cattle boat. My great grandmother is Catherine Gavan and was born 1856/58 according to the census. They had moved to the uk before 1871 census. Their children were Catherine, Mary, Margret, Elizabeth, Annie, James, dominic and Nicholas. Think he had 2 wives as a Bridget Gavan is also listed as his wife. His brother moved over as well and was also a cattle dealer. It does say on a census ballyshannon is where they came from. I’m trying to find information but seem to be hitting a brick wall if anyone can help please?
Thanks Tracy

My initial reaction was that the family was from Co. Mayo. However, I could not find any good leads for baptismal records in Mayo or any other county where the father was Dominick. Ballyshannon is a town in the southern part of Co. Donegal. There were no Gavan/Gavin baptismal records in Donegal.
Likely your ancestor Catherine was baptized in a parish that no longer has records back to the 1856-1858 period.
Let us know if you have any other clues.

Thank you for looking for me.
Amy had a daughter Ann born in 1869 and the maiden name shows Naughton. I have looked for that name but it doesn’t show on records. I have also tried to look for a desth certificate for her but I can’t find one either.
Bridgett the other one down as his wife, was christened at nenagh and lived in Ashscrugh. Her parents were John Egan and Ellen Murray.Tracyc

I was unable to locate any baptismal records for children of John Egan and Ellen Murray except for a family in Shandrum RC parish in Co. Cork but they did not have a Bridget.
