I am Marié Claassen de Vries from South Africa.  I am still trying to find information on DR. Geoffrey O'Connell who was held captured in the Bastille 1793 during the Reign of Terror in France. I have now found the following information in the BIOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARY OF IRISHMEN IN FRANCE by DR. RICHARD HAYES part XIV.   "Various other members of the O'Connell family were temporary officers in the French Service,  MORITZ (Muircheartach or MURTY), SON OF MAURICE O'CONNELL OF TARMON CO. KERRY, and his cousin, GENERAL COUNT DANIEL O'CONNELL went together as boys to France in 1761 and as cadets fought in the last stages of the SEVEN YEARS WAR for their adopted country.  Another cousin, SIR MAURICE CHARLES O'CONNELL, after studying in the IRISH COLLEGE, PARIS, entered the FRENCH army which he left at the REVOLUTION to join the BRITISH SERVICE.   Another relative, DR GEOFFREY O'CONNELL, practising his profession at PARIS, was arrested during the REIGN OF TERROR in 1793, but soon afterwards a permit was given to him to return to IRELAND.'" As previous said, DR. GEOFFREY O'CONNELL after his release went to KENT, England where SIR MAURICE CHARLES O'CONNELL were in charge of the 80th British Regiment.   In 1803 DR. GEOFFREY married ELIZABETH ROSS from KENT.  They returned to HILLGROVE, CO. KERRY, where their three children were born. After DR. GEOFFREY'S death circa 1813 - 1817, Elizabeth and her three children emigrated to South Africa.

If any person out there have any information to unravel this puzzle, I will be very grateful.  Thank you. Kind regards. Marié
