I have a medal from the Dublin Metropolitan Regatta 1903, presumably from my grandfather but unfortunately there's no name on the medal. On the reverse of the medal it says "visitors cup won by" but no other details.
Would anyone know about such an event or the medal that was issued? I can post a photograph of the medal but am unsure where on this site to upload it.
Any help would be wonderful.
Thank you.

  • From adverts in the press I can see that it was an annual rowing competition which, in 1903, took place on 29th & 30th June at Ringsend. Entrance fee was 2 shillings.

  • Hi Elwyn, thank you so much for your reply to my question. Would you know if there are newspapers I could try to look at which might show who were on the rowing teams or took part in the regatta?

  • There’s the Irish Newspaper Archive and the British Newspaper Archive (which has a lot of Irish papers):

I used the British Newspaper Archive. All I could find for that year was the advert for tickets. No names of teams, let alone individual competitors.

I found an Irish rowing organisation on the net. Maybe they have archives for 1903?
