1826 - 1829 patrick dunne born father of patrick dunne born in america aprroximate date as his son was born 1856 -30=1826 or 1857 - 30 = 1827 or 1859 - 30 =1829 presently all guesswork
there is a verbal memory recall tale that patrick dunne born 1826-1829 approx married a mcloughlin therefore i am doing the following 1846-1849 wedding 1826 + 20 years of age (1829 + 20) = patrick dunne marries a mcloughlin there is no documentary record that i know of so it is tentative at the present time it may be confirmed at some future date it may not and from his sons wedding in 1893 it is stated that he was a farmer and there may be two other possibles he is married in ireland or he is married in america all to be confirmed

1878 another of our relatives says patrick dunne born in america was an immigrant returning from america to irel and aged 5-6 or 7 so this throws up the following questions what state was he living in what port from america did he leave and what year and when did he arrive in ireland and what port did he return to in ireland all to be confirmed
1881 november 29th a further reason for selling rahan lodge property is that i john sherlock have personally realized the deep ingratitude of a large portion of the tenants for whom the obrien family had shown the greatest kindness and consideration a line invariably followed by me during the years in which i managed the estate as trustee and owner ................depression of the times and by the dishonest retention of their rents by some of the tenants of the rahan estate whilst the very heavy interest due in mortgage to scottish insurance company has been regularly paid by me witness james dunne rahan lodge peter leonard rahan lodge

1885 september mr james dunne the faithful stewards accounts he being the confidant of the family for many years and managing all matters for them the nuns sisters of charity until their deaths during the lives of mr and mrs obrien i john sherlock found it necessary to submit fully to mr dunnes aperions as he alone understood the circumstances of the rahan estate which was most intricate and were it not for his knowledge information and great exertions the property which sold at a very high figure and entirely for the benefit of the nuns would never have been realized anything like the price it brought from day of sale the fall in the value of landed property is amazing and one can see what an advantage was gained in expediting the sale peter leonard rahan lodge jane ocallaghan rahan lodge john sherlock rahan lodge

Do you happen to know Patrick's fathers name? Or any of his siblings? I found two Patrick Dunne's born in New York City before 1860. One father is Patrick and the other's name is Peter. Would you happen to know where he was born? Let me know and I would be happy to search for you.

My family was friedly with Peter Leanard and his wife (Kitty?). I used to visit the farm as a child in the 1950's. Grand people.
-
ray when you visited did kitty talk about her father patrick dunne born in america and do you recall if she mentioned a state of the union where he was born

I was too young to remember, it seemed that everyone in those days had relatives who had gone to America. We went to Katie (it was Katie not Kitty) and Peter's quite often, our families were distantly related, my great grandmother was a Mallone who ended up marrying a Molloy with a farm bordering the estate at Durra. My uncle worked for Peter on the farm for a while before moving to England.
Being young my memories are of the flagstoned kitchen and the hay barn, though I was concious of the Leonard's farm being a pleasant place that was always a treat to visit.
I have various lost relatives in America, unfortunately it seems anyone who could have remembered anything worthwhile towards finding them has died. Sorry cannot be of more help.

ray just confirming that
mary josephine was married to patrick leonard in 1918
and patricks father was
peter leonard and it is this peter leonard you were visiting and he was married to katie
so it definitely was peter you visited in 1950 and not patrick
there is a pat joe leonard living in rahan son of mary josephine and patrick leonard do you recall knowing of him

You know I may have the whole thing wrong here, My mothers family were Mallones and Malloys (and Flynns in America). But then again I know that Mallones and Malloys are pretty thick on the ground around there. As for the Leonards, it was definitely Peter and Katie that I'm remembering so although dollars to donuts its the same family, it may not be the same person. My cousins told me that the Leonards farm was sold when none of the children wanted to farm it, but having grown up in England and moved to Canada many years ago, I'm remembering only snatches of conversations. The Leonards must have been a well known family all the same. I think the question is what was Katie's maiden name and that I couldn't tell you. ....

ray next time i am down rahan way i will check this with pat joe leonard and get back to u

Hi William, a little more info then,. My mother was a Hogan from Tullamore, her mother was a Malloy from Dorrow anf her mother was a Mallone from Rahan and was born I imagine around 1850's. I still have cousins and one Aunt in Offally and Athlone but we seem to have lost the connection with Rahan. My mother used to tell me of the great country dances in Rahan a big night out with Lux soap flakes on the floor. I couldn't find the old Leonards farm now but would be interested in rediscovering it.
All the best, Raymond

When I was back in Tullamore in the 90's a cousin told me that if I placed my ear to the ground I'd be able to hear my relatives falling into their graves (it had been a sad succession of deaths in the family). I don't know if this link is yet another one but I'd be inclined to think so....
