My ancestor Captain Hugh Dubh O’Neill had a daughter Mary who married Charles Dubh O’Neill of Carlyan in the Feevagh, and died in 1791, aged 100.

Wonder if there is anybody with more knowledge or information about the Battle of the Boyne, and in particular the Earl of Antrim’s regiment. He is listed in the book King James’ Irish Army List (where my ancestor and their descendant Charles Henry O’Neill is listed as a subscriber), but there is not much information to go on.

Curious about his ancestry &c.

  • Carlyan today is Carlane, near Toomebridge. However I have no knowledge of the regiments in the Battle of the Boyne and so can’t help you there. Possibly the Linenhall Library in Belfast might have books covering that.

Yes, I know that re: Carlyan/Carlane. Charles Dubh and Mary had a son Hugh, who died in 1814, he was the last proprietor of Carlyan from our family. His son Felix C. was born at the family house, but became postmaster at Kilrea in the county of Derry, before moving back to Antrim, taking possession of Drumderg House on Moneyknick Road.

Will check the Linenhall Library next time I’m in Belfast, thanks for the tip.

  • There was someone else interested in that same family earlier this year. Dwayne O'Neill in Canada. Do you have his contact details? If you want to get in touch, E-mail me on Ahoghill@irelandxo.com and I can forward your details to him. I had a look at some of the records for the Antrim militia at PRONI for him and I also spoke to Fionn Morgan (Lord O'Neill's sister, who is the family historian). Dwayne has one or two newspaper articles which detail that branch of the O'Neill family back to the 1700s.

Will email you my details, and very interested to be in touch with anyone researching this subject. I am writing a book on the subject “The O’Neills of Clanaboy : the Rise and Fall of a Gaelic Kingdom” although it has since become three books, including a book based on the writings of my 3x great grandfather called “Life and Letters of Charles Henry O’Neill : The O’Neill of Clanaboy,” and a translation of Leabhar Cloinne Aodha Buidhe, both of which I originally intended to include in the appendix, but I ended up finding more than twenty other articles written by my ancestor in addition to the long series on The O’Neills of Clanaboy and it turned out to be too much.

I would be very interested to be in touch with Fionn Morgan as well, I know she is writing a book on the Shanescastle O’Neills, as her brother Raymond, Lord O’Neill, told me about it in 2013 when he gave my father and I a tour of Shanescastle. In her writings I have seen, she relies very much on this series of articles my ancestor wrote.

    Will touch base via email.

    Thanks for your reply.

This shows the exact relation between Fionn’s family and mine own, would be curious to see if/how Dwayne’s fits into the picture.

  • Rian,

I have sent you Dwayne's contact details separately together with a bit of background on what I know of this branch of the O'Neills. Good luck with your research.

  • Figured it out, Captain Hugh Dubh O'Neill was a great-grandson of the great General Eoghan Ruadh O'Neill. He was the son of Colonel Brian Ruadh O'Neill, who fought under his grandfather, who was in turn the son of Conn Ruadh O'Neill, the son of Eoghan Ruadh.
