Where would the Blackwater Area be located?
We only know that Edmund Fitzgerald came from the Blacklwater Area of Ireland sometime around 1870s to USA and settled in Glens Falls NY. He married a Margaret Breen in Saratoga NY area about 1880s. They had 5 children. His 1900 obit reads that he had a sister married to a Thomas Murphy and a brother, William, living in London.
Given names in childg=ren include Cornelius, Edmund/Edward, William, Daniel, Agnes, Francis

Hi Cynthia,
There were 3,370 Fitzgerald households in the Griffith's Valuation of Ireland.
From www.seanruad.com here is a list of all the towns/townlands in Ireland (in the 1851 townland index) with Blackwater in the name:

There is also a huge record group from Dr Casey on this area from mostly Co Kerry and part of Co Cork. I understand this is a difficult record group to use with various quality of print, copies of mimeographs, some text that is tiny, etc. - the following is from www.familysearch.org catalog.
Notes
Title from cover.
"What, when and where for the 16 volumes on Counties Cork and Kerry containing 30,000 pages, 3,000,000 personal names (indexed in each volume) with numbered maps of townlands, parishes, baronies, counties."
Partial contents: Odyssey of the Irish documented by blood group and craniometric analysis / Albert E. Casey and Eleanor L. Downey Prince -- Differential craniometry suggests European Pelasgians founded Egyptian, Chinese-Japanese, and Carib-Andean civilizations / Albert E. Casey ... [et al.]

You can Google Blackwater Ireland and I do believe you will see more possibilities.
Best of luck to you,

We only have info after he emigrated to US and he 1st shows up in 1870 census in Glens Falls NY. Definitely a brickwall. He seemed to be a hardworker, sawyer, painter, builder. We have 1 photo of him taken about 1889 or 1890. Should I send a copy of that?
Edmund/Edward's death certificate (info was given by his widow, Margaret Breen) lists Edmund's mother's name as Catherine Fitzgerald (not sure if that is her married surname or maiden name); his father is listed as Cornelius Fitzgerald.
He married here in USA. Margaret's, Edmund/Edward's wife, death certificate in 1934 lists her mother's maiden name as Johanna Daley and her father as Daniel Breen. Margaret had a sister,Hanna (nee Breen) P.C. Riordan, who sent letters to Margaret. The letters were postmarked NY County Kerry, Annanghmore, Headford (?)in 1933.
Hanna died in 1947 from what we can decipher from the postmark in a letter sent to relatives in Glens Falls by her daughter, Mary. Hanna's daughter, Mary, married a Connor in 1931 and was widowed in 1936. Hanna and Mr. Connor had 2 children, Jim , born abt 1935 and Mary, born abt 1932; .
It is all we have.
Thank You

Hi,
I just got a hit on google regarding Edmund Fitzgerald's name. In you posting you enquire as to where the Blackwater area is. Well...there's 4 rivers in Ireland that have the name blackwater and so you certainly have a choice.
There are two rivers that rise in Co. Kerry, and one of those flow into the north of Co. Cork. In between Banteer and Kanturk, which flows eastward towards Mallow. This area is know as the Blackwater area, it's relatively large to find an individual's family.
The reason why I posting is I have Fitzgeralds in my family tree, in fact my maternal grandmother was Margaret O'Connor (nee Fitzgerald). We have Cathrine Fitzgerald and Cornelius Fitzgerald as well. I am not sure if these would be your relations, but I have little or no information on where they are or where they went other than reference to the family they belonged to. You can view my family tree here at these links. The first link will show you me and my maternal grandmother Margaret. The 2nd link will show you Edmund Fitzgerald and his children. You may want to go through the difference children to find the pertinent individuals that you are seeking.

Now all this Fitzgerald family is located in 'The Island' near Newmarket, Co Cork, Ireland, whose nearby rivers flow eventually into the Blackwater. There are many Fitzgeralds in the local. I have Johanna Fitzgeral, who married into my parternal side with the O'Sullivan, she came from Askeaton, Limerick.
I am orginally from the area but currently live in the US as I immigrated years ago. So I know some of these areas well. If your family is indeed from this area, then the suggestion for you to research the Albert Eugene Casey collection will definitely have your information.
If you should connect with the family tree, please let me know, I will fill you in with the rest of the family branches.
Regards,
Eugene O'Sullivan
