Hello, I'm looking for Information on my great, great grandparents: Edward Madden born around 1839 and his wife Eliza (nee Hanley) born around 1841. I don't know the parish but from the English census records during their life they both state they were born in Co Roscommon. The census seems to suggest these approximate year of birth. They ended-up settling in Co Durham England where they remained until they died -- they were married in Durham City. So apparently not married before leaving Ireland.  Maybe they knew one another before emigrating together,  or they met along the way and them both having Co Roscommon birthplaces are just a coincidence? I don't have any information on their life in Co Roscommon Ireland before  nor about the date / route they travelled to the NE of England. So ar zero about their forebears or any siblings that they might've had.

Any help picking-up their (my)  family history in Co Roscommon ahead of my next visit to Ireland would be great. I've been invited to Ireland by a pal so would also visit their places of birth on that trip. Keen to go this year as soon as COVID-19 rules permit and ideally  when I figure out where in Co Roscommon I should aim for to make best use of my time there : )

Any guidance from this community  ahead of my next trip would be much appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and as you probably know, Hanley is a very common surname in Co. Roscommon. I found a June 14 1839 baptismal record for a Elizabeth Hanley father Patrick Hanley mother Margaret Flanigan. The RC parish was Elphin. They lived in a place called Foxtail which is not an official townland so a local place name.

Keep in mind that there were a number of RC parishes in Co. Roscommon that do not have records back to 1840 so the possibility exists that your Eliza was baptized in one of those parishes. The closest records to the 1839 record was one in 1832 and another in 1844.

The surname Madden was found in Co. Roscommon in the mid-1850s but Co. Galway had far more Maddens as well as Tipperary, Cork, Mayo and Offaly. Roots Ireland did not have any Edward/Edmond baptismal records near 1840. There was an 1817 record and then the next was in 1868. He could have been baptized in a parish that does not have records back to 1840.

The closest Co. Galway record was in Cappataggle RC parish-- Edmond Madden baptized November 29 1836 father Michael Madden mother Eleanor Flanagan. Cappataggle is in East Galway but a good distance from the Roscommon border.

Likely Edward and Eliza met in England.

Have you taken a DNA test if not you may want to consider a test. You may get fairly close matches with people who have more info on your Hanleys and Maddens.

Keep us posted on your travel plans. The Covid situation in Ireland is starting to improve and some of the current restrictions should be eased shortly.

  • Ancestry gives information regarding the marriage of Edward and Eliza. It states that Edward was the son of Andrew Madden and that Eliza was the daughter of Marie/Mary McKuen.  I don't know why only these two parents were named.  I hope this helps.

  • When Griffith's Valuation of Roscommon was taken in 1857-58, there were two Andrew Maddens in the county, as follows. This might be a clue to where your Edward was born.

Griffith Madden Andrew Tuam Kilgefin Co. Roscommon
Griffith Madden Andrew Leitrim Tibohine Co. Roscommon

In the Tithe Applotment Books, there was an Andy Madden listed in the townland of Leitrim in the parish of Tibohine in Co. Roscommon:

Madden         Andy  Leitrim           Tibohine        Roscommon  1825

    1796

In the 1796 Flax Growers List, the following Maddens were listed:

    Madden            Andrew               Boyle                Roscommon

    Madden            Andrew               Esternow             Roscommon

    Madden            Denis                Kilglass             Roscommon

    Madden            John                 Kiltoom              Roscommon

    Madden            Owen                 Tibohine             Roscommon

    Madden            Thomas               Creeve               Roscommon

    Madden            Thomas               Kilglass             Roscommon

One—Owen—was in Tibohine. There were two Andrews, one in Boyle and one in Esternow.

  • Wow!  What a wonderful set of helpful responses. Much appreciated that you would  take the trouble to do thos and so promptly. I was intrigued if Eliza was short for Elizabeth or not. She had a daughter Eliza (referred to in one snippet as Eliza Junior)  and her family had many of Elizabeths/ Eliza -- on one Census  I think there were four  in one household of different  generations and one for god measure through a marriage mistakenly recorded as stepdaughter not daughter in law just to confuse. Let me digest this information her and follow up. Many thanks!

  • I also have Co.. Roscommon ancestors who emigrated to Durham, married there around 1847-1849 and some children born there before leaving for the US a few years later.  There are Madden and Hanley among the sponsors/witnesses for church records-St. Cuthbert's RC in New Elvet, Durham City.

I have found information via good DNA matches with ties to both Durham and elsewhere that they and my Kelly ancestors were likely from Kilgefin Parish in Roscommon.  I see that one reply here lists a Tuam, Kilgefin location as a possibility for you and name of McKuen.  There are McKeons in Kilgefin from that time period (not my McKeons btw) so that may be a place to look into for your Hanly and Madden family.
