I’ve never been to Athlone. I’ve lived in New York State my entire life. My 2nd Great Grandfather, Edward Walsh, was born in Athlone, in approximately 1845. He immigrated to the US in 1863.

I have a love of history, and recently graduated from a genealogical certificate program from Boston University, with the intent on helping others to learn more about their own family lineages.

However, all I know about my Edward Walsh is that he loved poetry, learned to speak Latin, and was a storekeeper in Philadelphia in 1880 before moving his family to NYC. He died in Brooklyn, NY in 1890. His last occupation was of a "tea clerk". His eldest granddaughter, whom he’d never met, Marion Jeanette Walsh (Penno) (Meier), died recently in 2008 at the age of 98. Our entire family revolved like a constellation around her (and still does to some extent). She was wonderful.

My mother, for her 70th birthday, is planning to visit Ireland, along with my aunt, in October 2013. I’m hoping to discover more information before then. I know this isn’t much to go on, but if someone could collaborate with me during the next year, I’d greatly appreciated it.

Best Regards,

Bill Kleppel

  • Hello Rory,

Thank you for this information. I'm familiar with Family Search, and should have been more specific in my searches. I'm eager to dig into The Griffiths Valuation and 1861 Voters List as well. I'll get back to you if I find anything.

I'm looking forward to discussing volunteer opportunities with you here in the States. I'll be able to correspond a bit more after my area's ongoing Hurricane Sandy cleanup is finished. I've been fortunate for friends and family who have let me use their power from time to time. Hopefully, most of us will be online in a week or two.

    Thanks Again,

    Bill
