Good afternoon,

For years I've been searching for my 3rd great grandmother's parents.  There are so many documents that do not give her real year of birth but I've narrowed it down to 1839. She immigrated from Ireland to Canada before 1851 and can be found by the Florence Donahue family in Hastings County, Ontario, CAN.  She married in that county to William Joiner 25 May 1858 in Belleville, Hastings County, Ontario.  they had a daughter Mary Ann Joiner and he died before 1861 because Eliza is a widow in the Canadian 1861 Census. She left Canada about 1866-1867 and moved to Port Huron, MI.  She was not married but had children with a Dr Caleb Gilbert who was also from Hastings County, Ontario and appeared to have worked in the store owned by Florence Donahue.  Dr Gilbert was married and had a family in Detroit but appeared to keep one with Eliza in Port Huron.  They had the following children: Sarah (my 2nd great grandmother), Caleb "James", Walter John (father of famous baseball player Wally Gilbert), and Dency.  There may have been two other babies.

She appeared to give up on Dr Gilbert and is found in 1880 US census as the wife of Thomas Woods. There are no records of what happened to Thomas.

In 1892 Dr Gilbert dies and that seems to be when the family decided to leave Port Huron, MI (probably no more financial support).  Eliza, Walter, and James went to Duluth, MN to live and Sarah and Dency stayed in Michigan and were married.

James was killed in 1909 being hit by a train and she died 22 Jun 1915. No parents listed on her death certificate. Walter had her headstone say Eliza Gilbert but her death certificate says Eliza Woods.

Any idea on finding more for her parents or her baptism record?  I tried looking through Killarney from 1839-1844 and Valencia with no luck.

  • Hi Brenda -

I have looked for a marriage record for Peter Donoghue (along with variant spellings) with a bride's name Jane from 1820 through 1840.  Could the mother have another name?  Possibly Elizabeth, but was called Jane and her daughter called Eliza?  Unfortunately, I have not found anything.

For Elizabeth (Eliza), I have searched all of the Ireland for a baptismal record for 1834 through 1844.  Again, I have come up empty.

I did find Elizabeth's marriage record, which you probably have, as shown below:

Have you tried to find an obituary in Michigan?  Those occasionally give a more precise location of birth.

Please let me know if I can be of any additional assistance.

  • I have all the documents for her on my ancestry.com (Ozog_Sheneman) tree.  I've been through the Catholic Records too.  If she was a criminal, she did a good job hiding her trail. She seemed to name her children after other other family members (Caleb "James" after the father, Dency and Sarah w3ere names of Dr Gilbert's sisters)  Walter, Mary Ann I have not figured out yet. Mary Ann is not Dr Gilbert's daughter.

I also have my DNA on Gedcom.

  • DNA can be very helpful in these situations.  Have you found a match that is at least 3-5 generations back?

Is there any particular reason you looked at Killarney and Valencia?  Might the DNA have sent you there?

Keep looking.  Add any siblings or cousins to your search and see what you might find.

    Best of luck!

Because of Florence Donahue.  He is from that area and that's who she went to stay with when in Ontario, CAN.  Here is the 1851 Canadian Census.  The Eliza on here doesn't match up with mine so she may not have made it to Canada yet https://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.item/?app=Census1851&op=img&id=e002352874

I'm attaching her obit which doesn't give much info Duluth Herald, June 23, 1915, Page 11

I thought at one time this was a possible baptism before learning about Florence Donahue from Killucan; County of Roscommon; Diocese of Elphin https://registers.nli.ie/pages/vtls000633945_062

  • You may need to try putting the name as O"Donoghue .  This form of the name has been changed by some families even dropping the O'

I was born O"Donoghue and in my searches my family have kept this way of spelling all the way through the centuries but some changed it

Just a thought hope it helps 🙋
