I am trying to find any information on my great great grandmother. Her name is Eliza Hegarty.  She married my great great grandfather, George Grant, in 1850 in Melbourne Australia.  On one of the records of a daughter (who died as a baby) in 1858 she listed her birth as Westmeath Ireland and she was 32 which makes her yr of birth as 1826 thereabouts.  All the records I have looked through I have not been able to find when she came to Australia or a death record.   On her marriage certificate there were two witnessess. A Margaret Hegarty and Marianne Hegarty. I have found they arrived in Australia in 1849.  On their immigration information they said they were staying with their sister Ellen.. I have not been able to find a connection for any of them so I am not sure if they are sisters, cousins or what their relationship is.  No Ellen Hegarty has been found either so maybe Ellen and Eliza may be the same person, I am not sure.  If anyone can point me in the right direction to find information on Eliza I would be very greatful.

A number of RC parishes in Co. Westmeath do not have records back to 1826 so we don't know if a record for Eliza is available. I did search on the subscription site Roots Ireland and found a Hegarty family in the Collinstown RC parish in Co. Westmeath which may be a good lead.

The parents were Edward Hegarty and Mary Neill. The children were Eleanor 1809 Catherine 1811 Daniel 1813 Mary 1821 William 1823 Ellen 1826 Margaret 1831 NOTE there is a gap in Collinstown RC baptismal records from 1815-1821 so maybe more children. Also, the mother for the 1831 Margaret was shown as Margaret not Mary.

    Have you considered DNA testing?

Let me know what questions you have.

Thank you for comiong back to me so quickly.  I will take this information and see if I can find what I am looking for.  It is very interesting that there is an Ellen in the mix because the two ladies who were the witnesess on the marriage certificate were staying with their sister 'Ellen'  I wonder if maybe Eliza and Ellen are the same people.  Food for thought.

Yes DNA has crossed my mind but with just about every person down this particular line has died with no decendants (with the exception of my mum) I think it may be a waste of time.

I have been looking for this lady and her husband for years and keep hitting a blank wall.

I will go on the hunt again using your information.

    Thank you
