Hope someone could help me to find the birth of Elizabeth Casey born around 1862/64. Parents Michael Casey and Catherine (unknown surname). Catherine is shown as living with her daughter Elizabeth and her husband Bernard Gill in the 1901/11 census records Ballyglass, Cloontuskert, Roscommon. Also we know from the 1901 census that Catherine, a widow, was blind for 40 years as a result of polio. I haven’t found other children to Michael and Catherine Casey.

Appreciate any help/guidance to find more information on this Casey family

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Unfortunately, the RC parish for the area (Clontuskert/Kilgefin) does not have baptismal records until 1865. Civil registration started in 1864 so it appears that Elizabeth was born and baptized prior to 1864.

By the way, smallpox was the cause of Catherine Casey's blindness.

  • Roger, is there any other sources that you can recommend help to find information on this family?

It’s by no means certain in which parish the birth / marriage occurred. I’ve worked through some other parishes on the possibility that Elizabeth moved at the time of her marriage to Bernard Gill. Neither could I find any marriage record for a Michael Casey with a Catherine

Elizabeth did not move at the time of her marriage. The 1884 civil marriage record shows that she was 21 and living in Ballyglass when she married. See third record on this link. The age 21 would place her year of birth around 1862-1863 which unfortunately is prior to the existence of records in that area.

The marriage occurred at the chapel of Ballyleague which was and is part of the parish of Kilgefin.
