We have been trying to locate the whereabouts of an Ellen Kelly who was a housekeeper for a wealthy landowner named Daniel Mathers and was in the 1911 Census with him at Falty Ballydangan Athlone Co Roscommon.  Her birth place was listed as Co Kildare.  We know she had a sister Brigid Connolly as Mr. Mathers in his Will left both of them some money, and Ellen was well looked after for her life with an annual payment.   We do not know if she remained in the Parish of Moore/Falty and perhaps married.   Maybe she returned to her native Kildare?   Maybe she emigrated as she would  have been well off enough to do so.   A wonderful play has been written on the Mathers Family in this area and also Scotland where they originated from.   A book is currently being written and it would be wonderful if the Author could include details of this very loyal servant Ellen Kelly  It would be great to know what became of her, perhaps even a photo or two.   We have searched in the Co Kildare records for an Ellen Kelly and a Brigid Connolly, but we are not coming up with any exact matches.   There is one possibility a family of Kellys in the Ballygibbon Carbury area of Kildare there is a Mary Ellen Kelly  and a sister Brigid there. She is listed as domestic servant and the age is not too far off.    We did come across on the Co Kildare Geneology site a Brigid Kelly marrying a Michael Connolly in Edenderry but somehow cannot locate it now so if anybody has any info on this please let us know.  Edenderry is not too far we believe from Carbury.   Also in this area interestingly is a Mathers family, but so far we have no reason to believe there is any connection with the Mathers in Falty.  So we are appealing to anybody in Co Kildare, and the Edenderry area of Offaly, to come forward if they have any information which might be of help.  It would be a shame if the book was printed and afterwards relatives or descendents of Ellen and Brigid came forward without her included.   It would be lovely to have her included in this very historic, sad and moving story, which also includes a very well documented Cattle Drive in 1916, which was re enacted by the Moore History Group last Sunday.   Any information help or advice would be appreciated.   Look forward to hearing from you and would appreciate it being shared in the Kildare and Offaly area.  Kind regards   Mary

  • Since posting the above message another possibility is an Ellen Kelly aged 18 in the 1901 census in Fegans Lane Maynooth.   She is listed as nurse/domestic.  The age is good.   Anybody with information on this family to check if it is our Ellen Kelly would be appreciated.
