Hi. My great-grandmother was Ellen Kenny (Kinny in some paperwork) born 24 August 1850 to Michael Kenny and wife Margaret. No location is given.

Ellen married Frank Mason from Dunboyne (another post of mine) in Dublin in 1873. I have the church record and there's not much information there, either.  As of the date of her wedding her father was deceased, but the record states he was a steward.  It's my understanding that could mean anything from a butler to an overseer of land & property.

As her future husband came from Dunboyne, I thought I'd check to see if there was any trace of an Ellen Kenny or her family in the Dunboyne area with the correct parents. If Michael Kenny had been a land steward, perhaps he might have worked at the estate there in Dunboyne? Is there a historical society that might have those employment records?

As both Ellen and Frank were living in Dublin when they married, I assume they may have come from the same place to work in Dublin - or perhaps not and they only met in Dublin.  In Dublin Ellen was living & working as a servant in Mountjoy Square when she married Frank, who was a groom living in Gt. Britain Street - nearby.

They both left for the USA very shortly after marrying, Frank first with Ellen following.

Thanks for any info you might have or be able to point me towards.

  • Nan:

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find an Ellen Kenny baptismal record in Co. Meath from 1845-1855 using the parents names you provided. I then extended the search to all of Ireland and still did not find a record.

    Have you considered DNA testing?

  • Hi Nan,
On RootsIreland I found the transcription of a birth of an Ellen Kenny who was baptized 23 August (not 24) in 1847 (not 1850) in the Catholic parish of BOOTERSTOWN, BLACKROCK, and DUNDRUM in County Dublin. Parents were Michael Kenny and Margaret (no surname given). Sponsors Wm. Keegan and Julia Kelly.
    I hope this is helpful.

  • Hi Patricia. Thanks. If the names were not so common I'd say maybe that's her, but there is no telling. I appreciate your trying, though.

Hi Roger. I've got my genes up on GEDMatch now, as well as in the Ancestry database. Not getting anything useful so far. One can always hope, though.

    Best wishes to you both,
