Hi.  I am looking for any information on my great great grandmother Ellen Preston.  She was born around 1832 in Ireland in Clonmell, County Tipperary.  Her father was Jeremiah Preston.  Her religion was Roman Catholic.  She worked in the Clonmel workhouse and came to Australia via the ship The New Liverpool in 1849.  Upon arrival she worked for Richard Hull in Richmond, Australia as a housemaid.  In 1852 she married my great great grandfather Robert Jones.  They had a son John Henry Jones around 1860 in Victoria Australia.  I have been searching for sometime for their parents names or something about Ellen. I would love to know her better.   I know she was called an Irish Famine Orphan, but apart from the above I wish I could find out more.  Any help or advice would be appreciated.  Thank you.

  • Do you have any further details on this baptism form you mentioned ?
Are you certain that's 'your' Ellen - a  record of a baptism would usually include parents names... have you located any Austrailian records with her parents names - e.g. marriage or death certs ?

A search of the St.. Mary's RC parish in Dublin city shows just about four Preston baptisms that I can see 1832 +-5 years, four different families - two Mary's, a Bridget and an Ellen born 1828... parents names for this Ellen are Jeremiah and Ellen - no maiden surname is recorded at for the mothers in this set of registers. Residence is Church Street, which is in Dublin north city, the sponsors (godparents) were John McClean and Celia Rooney.  You can view the record on the National Library of Ireland website - see the first line of this page.

It would be quite unusual to be born in Tipperary and baptised in Dublin city, a good distance to travel from Co. Tipperary in the 1820s/1830s, could the baptism of your Ellen have been a different St. Mary's possibly e.g. St. Mary's Clonmel ?

I think we may have corresponded by email recently through my website ?

p.s. Ellen's travel record show that she was an Assisted Passenger, age 17 (c1832) arriving on the 9th August 1849, and gives her native place of as Clonmel, Co. Tipperary.

  • Hi Shane.  Thank you for your email.  I dont have Ellen's birth certificate, but i have her death cert details.  It states she is Ellen Jones, birth year abt 1834 , place of death Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia, date of death 28 may, 1901.   Fathers name was listed as Jeremiah Preston.  Son, John Jones.  Mothers name was unknown.  Her marriage cert says Helena Preston, husband Robert Jones, 17 march, 1852 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.  This is all i know so far.  Thank you for letting me know that it is not Dublin.  You are right, it is Clonmel.
