Trying to find details of my grandfather. Told his family were from Eyrecourt. How can I find out where he was born and baptised.?

My grandmother was Katherine Gallagher and her family emigrated to America where she was born.

Her father was James Gallagher. How can I find where he came from in Ireland. I hope someone can help me in my search. Thank you.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Eyrecourt is a village in East Galway  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eyrecourt  What was your grandfather's name and year of birth? Do you know his parents names?

James Gallagher would have been a very common name in Ireland. We would need his approximate year of birth and parents names in order to see if we can locate a record.

    Morning Roger

Thank you very much for your prompt reply. Much appreciated.
Details which I have of my grandfather:

    Richard Eyre

    Birth: 1862  place unknown

Death: 13 June 1942 place Durban South Africa

Marriage to Katherine Gallagher at Roman Catholic Church  Kingwilliamstown South Africa.

    Date 14 September 1896

The only information I have about my Grandmother is that her father was James Gallagher and that she was born in Philadelphia US.

My grandfather's fathers info that I has is as follows:

    Capt Richard Eyre 48th Regiment

    Born  1833 (estimated) Place Eyrecourt.?

Died Blackrock Co 23 May 1866

Married to Monimia Mary Butler daughter of Major William Henry Butler 45th Regiment of Foot.

I hope this info, although very little, is able to help trace my grandparents.

    Thank you

    Pat Hobden née Eyre.

    Hi,

Betham Genealogical Abstract Images has details of a Richard Eyre who appears to be a Clergyman in Eyrecourt, Co. Galway. The record is No. 397 and shows his birth date as September 13th 1773. The date May 24th 1776 is crossed out.

His wife is shown as: Androtta?, sons: Giles, John, Richard and Samuel.  Daughter Elizabeth by first wife?

There is a share of information in relation to land holding and transfers, including grandsons up to the 1850's.

  • Thanks for the info. My grandfather and grandmother were Roman Catholics so I was surprised to see that my great-grandparents were married in St James Piccadilly. I am trying to confirm this info.

  • Hi Beth Thanks for your response. My father was Basil Robert Eyre, son of Richard Eyre and brother of Annessley and Cyril Eyre. They had a younger brother Lionel Richard who died in infancy.
If you are interested I have discovered a little of the history of the Eyre family. You can contact me through Messenger on Facebook.

Best wishes  Pat Hobden née Eyre.
