  • Hello Katherine,

Any idea of the timeframe you're interested in.  If you could go back through your parents and grandparents datesof birth perhaps you might have a timeframe of when Nora lived here.  Was she born in Glenegad or did she marry in there.  Until you have a little more info then it really will be an uphill struggle.

  • Katherine,

Click on census.nationalarchives.ie.  Then click browse the census.  Then choose your year 1901 or 1911.

Then click tipperary.  Then click clonmel east urban.  Then click glenegad road.

You may find what you are looking for in these years.  As I dont know what years you are interested in , I cannot help you any further.

Hope  this may be of some help to you,

    Regards,

    Anne Dennehy

P.S.  The census is totally free to browse and is so interesting to trawl through.

  • Hi Ann

Its a long time since I was on this site as you can see.I have just started again on my family history. My Mothers Grandmother Nora O'Mahoney lived in Glenigadd Road until she died in 1952.I know her son lived there with his wife and family after her death. Her son John died in 1982.I am finding it very hard to find any trace of them on the censuses or bmd.I would really like to get hold of copies of enteries of censuses or bmd.I dont know where any of the grandmothers children where born or even married. She had as far as I know 1 Boy John and 2 girls Mary and Theresa.Mary was my mothers mother (my grandmother) she was born in approx 1893 but I dont know where.John born 1901 dont know where.Theresa born 1902 dont know where, but I do know  thier mother Nora was born in Newcastle Limerick. My mother was born to Mary in 1912 in the workhouse apparently under the name of O'Neill. My mothers cousin was married to a man in the name of Burns(Billy) I think and he was the Mayor of Clonmel in the 1980s I think or late 70s.Although you may think I have a lot of information about the family it is frustrating that I cant get anything in writing to confirm all of this.I would appreciate it if you could possibly help me which way I should go to gain this

    Thankyou Kath.

    .

  • Hi Kath,

I'm going to try and search for your relatives.  Unfortunately this site really only deals with dates up to about 1920 so I can't help you with anybody afgter that date.

I'm still trying to get a handle on all the informtion contained in your post.  It's always better to work backwards through a family

    Going back through the years.....

Your mother (name??) was born in 1912 to Mary O neill?  IN Clonmel??

Her mother was Mary  ?  born in 1893   but dont know where??

John  her brother?born 1901 but dont know where

    Theresa born 1902.

Many of  these people should be in the 1901 census but I'm wondering if you have any father's name.  It really helps when searching.

Is Nora short for Hanora?  Is O Mahoney her married name.  what was the name of her husband?

The name of O Mahoney is quite common so I really would need the name of Noras husband.  Mary, Teresa and John's father.  If I could have that then I would be able to search really quickly.

Please get back to me asap and I will do all I can.

I hope that I'm reading your post in the correct way.  Have I the lineage correct?

    Anne

  • HI Ann

Thankyou so much for getting back to me so quickly and also trying to help me with my search.

Yes you do have the linage right.

My Mothers name was Teresa O'Neill she was born in June 1915 (sorry I gave you the wrong year!) she was born to Mary O'neill (nee) O'Mahoney, in Clonmel..

Mary O'Neill  Teresa's(mother) was born in 1893 Place of birth unknown.

    John O'Mahoney Marys brother was born in 1901 p.o.b unknown.R.I.P 1982 Clonmel

Theresa O'Mohoney (Johns sister) born July 1902 P.O.birth unknown.

Nora O'Mahoney was born in Newcastle Limerick in 1862 R.I.P 1952 Clonmel

Unfortunatly I have none of the fathers names, Nora isnt short for Honora. I can only presume she married an Omahoney maybe in Newcastle.

I would have thought the family where living in Glenigad Rd in 1911 but cant find it in my search.I know my mother attended The Presentation Convent when she was a child.I realise people used to move around a lot in those days.

Just to put a bit more into the mix my grandmother Mary O'Neill had a son and 2 daughters born in Ireland am quite sure her son was born in Clonmel in about 1917 and emigrated to Canada probably in his twenty or thirties he joined the Mounted Police. Her daughters Nora and Mary O'Neill left Ireland together with their mother about 1937 and came to live in Liverpool where I am living.Oh if only we had asked questions when they where all alive the mysteries would have been solved.

Thankyou for trying to help me much appreciated.

    Kind Regards

    Kath.

  • Dear Kay,

I have spent hours trawling through records on rootsireland, familysearch.org, clonmelgraveyards etc.

All I could find were a few records.... You can decide whether these people are your relatives or not.

    Mary O Mahoney born 2nd June 1913

    Thurles Workhouse

    Female

father not recorded       Mother Mary Mahoney

I found a marriage certificate on rootsireland for..

         18 June 1916

Mary O Mahoney                                                              Thomas O Neill

Glenegad Road, Old Bridge, Clonmel                                  Military Barracks, Clonmel

    Domestic Servant                                                              Soldier

    age 21                                                                               age 20

    father:Thomas O Mahoney                                                   father:William O Neill

I saw the death details of Norah O Mahoney on clonmelgraveyards.com and it states she was 90 when she died.  As you say this would mean she was probably born circa 1862, but I can't find any record for her.  Civil registration didn't start until 1864 so we could only look at parish records for a baptism.

On rootsireland I found 136 records for a Mary O Mahoney born around 1893 but as I don't know the father's details then I cant be sure which one is yours.  On looking at Mary who married in 1916, she says her age is 21.  This would give her a birth date of 1895.

These are the definite records that I found.  As her husband was a soldier is it possible he was posted somewhere else where Teresa was born?

Sorry that I cant help you any further,

Hope this will help you on your way,  If I can be of any further assistance....

    Kind regards

    Anne
