I'm looking for information about the family of Joseph Ryan born 1 April 1828. His first son was named Daniel so I think maybe that was his father's name. He had a twin brother (unknown name). He was sent to America with his twin brother. Family folklore said that they were boys when they arrived in America but I haven't found any evidence of that. They were sold as indentures off the ship in Pennsylvania and ended up in Castleton, Vermont. I found his grave marker that said he was from Castletownarra. His other children were: Katherine, Daniel, Joseph, James and John.

  • Hi,

Thank you very much for your message. I hope that someone with information makes a connection with you and helps you to further your research.

In the meantime have you tried..

    Church records:

Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. For Castletownarra/Portroe parish, follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Tipperary%20North&parish=Portroe&churchid=802

You could also try searching at:

www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.

www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.

    Land records:

You could also check for record of the family in the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century. There are two:

The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

    and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

Some other websites that you may find useful are:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

  • Hi Maggie! Do you know the birthday of your John Ryan? I know that my husband's great aunt was in contact with the Ryan's in Australia at one time. Her name was Alice Ryan from Fair Haven, Vermont. She was writing letters and they would write back. My father-in-laws name was John J Ryan. Would love to reconnect with the Ryan's in Australia and trade information. Thank you for your response! Dana Kelly

  • From rootsireland.ie I have uncovered the marriage of John Hayes (1819-1889) and Bridget Ryan (1822 – 1894), the birth records for their daughter Nora or (Honora), and the births of twins John and Bridget.

Marriage of John Hayes, (no address listed) and Bridget Ryan (address: Hogan’s Pass) on 12 Feb 1844, at Monsea Parish, Tipperary, Roman Catholic, (Witnesses James Hayes and Bridget Ryan)

From the 1865 New York state census records, we know that John and Bridget were the Parents of seven children. Only three of them survived to adulthood.

Baptism of Daughter Nora (Sponsors: Mgt. Ryan and not recorded) on 24 Jan 1847 at Gurtinilla (Gorteenakilla?), Monsea, Tipperary

Baptism of twins John (Sponsors: John Ryan and Mary Nolen) and Bridget (Sponsors: Mary Ryan and John Cleary) on 22 Mar 1849 at Gurteenakilla, Monsea, Tipperary. I have not found death records for twins John and Bridget, but I believe that they died either before the family moved to America or on the trip to America. Bridget’s sponsor was Mary Ryan who was the elder Bridget’s sister. Later I found John and Mary Cleary in Lima, N.Y.

After arriving to America, John and Bridget had two more daughters Bridget and Mariah, and sons James and John in Williamsburg, Massachusetts. Bridget and Mariah died from Scarletina in 1858 at ages 7 and 4, only 15 days apart from each other.

I think that there may have been other Ryans there, as I have seen the name on Vitals records.

The Hayes family moved to Lima, NY around 1860. There are a few gravestones with “Natives of Tipperary” on them. One has Castletownarra, two others have Youghal, which are right next to each other. It looks like several families moved together.

There are also several Ryans at St Rose Cemetery in Lima, NY. One being a Daniel Ryan that died at Custer’s Last Stand

  • Maggie,

Thank you for your kind help! Sorry abou the latness of my reply! I have been in contact with Peter Patten. He is a wonderful source of historical information on the area. He didn't know anything about the twin brother of Joseph. The names are different then the names in Joseph's family so I'm not sure there is any connection. Thanks again! Dana

Thank you for your response! I know there was a Cornelius Hayes( born 1833 Ireland) in Castleton, Vermont. Cornelius's wife was Mary Tulley. His daughter, Bridget, married a John C Fitzpatrick there. I'm not sure if the family was from Tipperary but a lot of the families that settled in that area were from Tipperary.

  • Hi Dana

No problems about late reply, I have been away for the most of Sept & October. Peter has a great knowledge of the Castletownarra families who went to the USA. My cousin & I here in Australia are trying to do the same for our Castletownarra families who came to Australia.
