I am searching for the birth father of Patrick William Burke. Patrick was born on March 17, 1852. His father was probably born between 1815 and 1830. Although Patrick was born in England, I have reason to believe that Patrick’s father likely comes from the County Mayo/Galway area. The villages of Clonbur, Cong, and Ballinrobe could be possible locations. I think Patrick’s mother’s maiden name is Winifred McDermott. She would have been about the same age as Patrick’s father. One possible scenario is that Patrick’s parents left Ireland for England, where Patrick was born. Patrick’s father may have died between 1852 and 1855, and his mother may have remarried. Any information or clues about Patrick’s father would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Tom Burke

  • Hello, Tom. You don't say what Patrick's father was called. Have you seen Patrick's birth certificate or baptism register? The former will have his father's name and occupation. The birth certificate will have his mother's forename and maiden surname. Where did you get the name Winifred McDermott from?  Patrick's marriage certificate should also state father's name and occupation.

Where was Patrick born? Have you found him and his family on censuses? Who was with him? Did Patrick have older siblings?

Why do you think that Patrick's father was born between 1815 and 1830? Historic GRO death registration index for deaths in England have age at death.

    What religious denomination was Patrick?

  • Hello, Maggie May. If I knew the name of Patrick's father, the mystery would be solved! But alas, I don't, other than Mr. Burke. I have consulted all of the documents you mentioned, plus a number of others on Ancestry, Findmypast, FamilyTreeNow, and RootsIreland. I have been able to piece together the facts that I shared above, but none of the sources have complete and reliable information about Patrick's birth father. I was hoping to find some local knowlege that isn't in official records. Maybe someone who is familiar with Patrick's story will read my post? Thank you.
