I am finding it very hard to locate my family from Ireland. My aunty Aileen Hartley(nee Jordan) was born in Ireland on 5/2/1919 and I think she is either from Cork or Galway. She moved to Birmingham in England and my father Wilfred John was born there ono 14/8/21. I do know that my grandmother Aileen Sara (Ellen) Wynne was born in Woodquay in 1886..Beyond this I am not sure.I would like to trace my father's roots.I know I have connections to the surname Perry but not sure where that is.

Can anybody help me beyond this please?

  • Aileen Agatha Kathleen Jordan was born fifth Feb. 1919 in Dublin--not Cork or Galway-- to Wilfred Joseph Jordan, Royal Military College Sandhurst, and Aileen Sara Wynne. Wilfred was in the Royal Fusiliers.

You can see the birth register here: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…

  • If you search the 1901/1911 Irish censuses at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/, you'll find Aileen Wynne living with her parents, John and Catherine, and siblings in Dublin. One of the censuses says she was born in Galway City.

See next to last record for birth of Sarah Ellen Wynne father John Wynne was a Head Constable in the RIC. Mother was Kate Perry. John and Catherine Perry were married in 1871 in Co. Kerry. Catherine's father was also in the RIC

  • Hi again,

I am having trouble with the census. I have put in my grandmother Aileen Wynne in but nothing is coming up. What is DED?

I put her county as Galway and her sex as female but it give me no results. I also tried putting in Catherine Wynne and the same problem/

  • Mary,
Put in Dublin, not Galway, and you will find Aileen Wynne.
    Good luck.

  • I looked at the 1901 census and noticed my great grandmother Catherine Wynne had 6 children mentioned as living but there were only 3 on the form listed.

The same for the 1911 census and Albert Ed was not listed then. What could be the reason for this? I am very curious.

  • I have also noticed that from 1821 there was a census every ten years but after 1851 there doesn't appear to be anothe census till 1901. Why is that?

  • Mary:

There was a census from 1821 thru 1891. The 1821-1851 censuses were destroyed in the 1922 Public Records Office fire in Dublin. Fragments remain and those returns are on the National Archives site. Here is an explanation of what happened to the census returns for those years https://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/1861-1891-irish-census.html

The children not shown on the 1901 and 1911 censuses were likely adults and living in another part of Ireland or possibly they emigrated. They may have married see www.irishgenealogy.ie for civil marriage records.

Catherine Perry was likely born around 1845. We know that her father was John and that he was in the RIC. I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find a baptismal record for a Catherine Perry with father John that was a Church of Ireland baptismal record.  Many Church of Ireland records were destroyed in the 1922 fire cited above and others are held locally or in Dublin. I found a John Perry age 20 who entered the RIC in February 1827. His native county was Tipperary. He served in Tipperary, Waterford and Kerry and was a Head Constable when he retired. (The John Wynne/Catherine Perry marriage was in Co. Kerry). He was pensionerd in 1856. Beyond those facts, I've not found any other info.

  • Thanks so much for your help Roger. You have done a marvellous job. Sat 14th August 2021 would have been my father Wilfred's 100th birthday so this is very poignant.

I am wondering if we have any long lost cousins buzzing around Ireland. Who knows!

  • Hi Mary

The 1911 Census indicates that they had 7 children with 6 Children still alive in 1911. Below are links to the earlier Births. Dosnt' appear to be any  early Deaths. Perhaps the earlier siblings had emigrated  and one had died overseas !

    John birth Kerry in 1872    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…;

    William birth 1874 Kerry     https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…

    Samuel birth 1876 Kerry    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1876/03029/2110231.pdf

Richard birth Galway in 1879 https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1879/02914/2067868.pdf

  • Fantastic work Gerard! I am stuggling however to locate John Wynne. When I type in his details it comes up with Status 404 Not found. Why is this?

I also cannot find his sister Kathleen Wynne.( my dad's aunty Kate)

I am so surprised to learn about all these relatives on my father's side! He never mentioned any of his uncles! Only Aunty Kate (Kathleen)

My grandmother's birth cerificate shows her name as Sara Ellen yet her death certificate which I have already shows her name as Aileen. Not sure why?

Thank you for all your efforts. What a wonderful service you all provide! I am sure I have lost cousins/second cousins in Ireland somewhere and it is such a shame about later cencus records being destroyed!

Anyway a great insight already found. Thank you again so much.

  • Hello again, I am wondering why I can't access my father's uncle's birth record? His name is John Wynne and he was born in 1872 in Kerry. When I clicked onto the link it said there was no listing yet all the other uncles were there . I also can't locate dad's aunty Kate (Kathleen? ) Wynne who was born in 1884..Can you help me please?

I would also like to be able to locate my father Wilfred's( who is the son of Aileen Wynne (1886))paternal grandfather. His father was a member of the constabulary and worked in Birmingham.

I suspect dad's grandfather may have been Irish but I don't know his name. Any clues on how I could find this out?

Many thanks for all your help..Will give another donation soon!
