Hi, I'm looking for confirmation of some birth records for Finney's born in Clonfert parish around the following dates:

- Richard Finney c1795

- Thomas Finney c1800

- Robert Finney c1803

- Jane Susan Finney c1808

I think copies of at least some of these birth records are held in Dublin.

Most researchers have their parents as Richard Bernard Finney and Frances Brown married at St James, Dublin in 1794 but I am no longer sure that is correct. The Richard Finney who married Frances Browne in Dublin was a smith but he appears to have died in Dublin in 1810 leaving only one daughter Frances.

The Finney's I am looking for remained in the area around Eyrecourt and Tuam.

If the mother of Richard, Thomas, Robert and Jane Susan is also called Frances Browne I would be interested in anyone has any records for the family in the Clonfert area around that time including any marriage records for Richard Finney (also recorded as Richard Bernard Finney in many trees).

If anyone can help with these records and their sources I would much appreciate it.

Thank you

Anna Finney

  • Anna,

The baptism records for the RC parish of Clonfert, Galway begin in 1884 (as do the COI records); and the marriage records are from 1810-1812 & 1894-1917. I don't understand why you say they are in Dublin.  Unfortunately for the time period in which you are searching, you will not find baptism or marriage records for the Finneys.

  • Carolyn. These are COI records. Most were destroyed in 1922 but some survive at individual churches and marriage records from 1845 along with the occassional earlier record at the RCB Library in Dublin. I'm just not sure where the specific dates I have came from. For instance I have a birth date of 13 Oct 1795 for a Richard Finney at Eyrecourt and 1 July 1800 for a Thomas Finney also at Eyrecourt.  Possibly these came from death records or gravestones in the churchyard at the COI in Eyrecourt. I did go to the RCB library and the various churches about 15 years ago and found a lot of useful information but no longer have the copies of the research I did there.
