Edmund 1st appears in 1870 census in Glens Falls NY.  Definitely a brickwall.  He seemed to be a hardworker, sawyer, painter, builder.  We have 1 photo of him taken about 1889 or 1890.  Should I send a copy of that?

Edmund/Edward's death certificate (info was given by his widow, Margaret Breen) lists Edmund's mother's name as Catherine Fitzgerald (not sure if that is her married surname or maiden name); his father is listed as Cornelius Fitzgerald.  His wife's nieces and nephews said all they heard about Edmund's origins was that he came from teh Blackwater area.

He married here in USA.  Margaret's, Edmund/Edward's wife, death certificate in 1934 lists her mother's maiden name as Johanna Daley and her father as Daniel Breen.  Margaret had a sister,Hanna (nee Breen)  P.C. Riordan, who sent letters to Margaret.  The letters were postmarked NY County Kerry, Annanghmore, Headford (?)in 1933.

Hanna died in 1947 from what we can decipher from the postmark in a letter sent to relatives in Glens Falls by her daughter, Mary.  Hanna's daughter, Mary,  married a Connor in 1931 and was widowed in 1936.  Hanna and Mr. Connor had 2 children, Jim , born abt 1935 and Mary, born abt 1932; .

Any help appreciated in tracking Edmund Fitzgerald or Margaret Breen Fitzgerald.

Thank You
Cindy Fitzgerald

  • Do you know when Edmund was born or how old he was when he died?

The Blackwater area is a big area following the river Blackwater trough the counties Kerry, Cork, and Waterford in Ireland

I am only guessing about Margaret Breen as I have no idea when she was born, but this could be here ?

  • This might be a co-incidence and both names are very common in the area, but it might be worth contacting the Kerry group here on the website and see if they can find out more http://www.irelandxo.com/group/county-kerry

Maybe the Fitzgeralds and Breens were from the same place in Kerry, Rathmore. No record for Edmund/Edward unfortunately

  • Thank You.  What term should I use to search Rathmore?  It is not showing up in the IrelandXO site as an option.

  • Thank you.  These people seem to be realm possibilities.  I did find the Rathmore diocese listings by chance and viewd them.  My husband seems to agree that these are potential ancestors.  We are finally glad to at least chip at the brickwall for the Fitzgerald side.  As with so many immigrant families in the USA, people did not talk about their former homeland either because they were making a new life  or were afraid of being deported.  What a great project Ireland has going.

    Thank you so much
