I am searching for the relatives of Anthony Flannery who was born in Ballina, County Mayo. His parents were Thomas Flannery and Bridget Killgallen. He had two brothers Martin James Flannery and Thomas that emigrated to the United States. He also had a sister Catherine that emigrated to the United States. Martin ( my grandfather) passed away In 1950 before I was born.  I’m not sure if there were other siblings.
Martin was born circa 1881.

  • J K: I located a civil birth record for a John Flannery in 1891. See seventh record. https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur… I found the family in the 1901 census in Carrowcastle under the surname Flannelly. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Mayo/Sallymount/Carrow… Back to Flannery in 1911 http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Mayo/Sallymount/Carrow… Bridget indicates eight children with six living in 1911. • The 1891 and 1911 are the Flannery family I am related to. The 1901 census is a different family, Flannelly, and a different address. My Martin Flannery had already emigrated to the US BY 1901. I would appreciate if you could find more on Anthony and John. I also wonder why Catherine was not listed in any census. Could you see if you could find her birth record as well as Martins.

  • JK: I found Anthony in 1883 See last record NOTE surname was shown as Flannelly https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur… Unable to find Catherine or Martin. I'm guessing Catherine had already emigrated by 1901 unless she was living with another family in 1901. www.irishgenealogy.ie is a free site I would suggest that you search in the Ballina registration district for Flannery and Flannelly births/marriage and deaths. • I know that there can be variations in the name but that is not the Anthony I am looking for. That Is Anthony Flannelly who is from the other Carrowcastle family not the one I am looking for. The first names match but not the address and not the ages. If you find anything on Anthony Flannery perhaps in later censuses I would appreciate it.

  • JK: Are you saying that there were two Thomas Flannery/Bridget Kilgallon couples in that area of Mayo? Kilgallen/Kilgallon was not a very common surname. Roger

  • I was wrong. This is the Anthony Flannery I was looking for. Thank you. I can account for five of the children : Anthony, Martin, Thomas, John and Catherine. I don’t know if the sixth child was a boy or girl. If you could try to find the birth records in the sixth child and Catherine I would appreciate it.

  • Hi JK. This is my family. I have been researching since the 1970s. The surnames are recorded as Flannelly and Flannery on different records, which can be misleading. The earliest info comes from 1920 when Dan Flannelly (born circa 1859) applied for the Old Age Pension and the authorities checked the 1851 census to see if his family was recorded on it prior to his birth. The marriage date of his parents and the birth dates of his siblings stem from the 1851 census. Later info comes from the parish registers primarily.

James Flannelly married Margaret Kilbride in 1833 and they lived in a dwelling at GPS 54.086311,-9.071403 on the first edition 6 inch map (1837). Initial research indicated that they had at least 12 children on record: [1] John (born circa 1835) married Ann Murphy in 1875; [2] James (born circa 1837) married Mary Kilmartin in 1863; [3] Michael (born circa 1839] married Winny Rafter in 1864; [4] Tom (born circa 1841) married Bridget Kilgallon in 1869; [5] Anthony (first of that name) (born circa 1842 but died in infancy); [6] Pat (born circa 1844); [7] Martin (born circa 1846); [8] Owen (born circa 1848); [9] Mary (born circa 1849); [10] Kate (born 1850); [11] Anthony (second of that name) (born circa 1856) married Bridget Ferguson in 1882; [12] Daniel (born circa 1859) married Margaret Kilmartin in 1878. I am a descendant of [12] Daniel.

Initial research on Tom Flannelly and Bridget Kilgallon indicated that they had at least 7 children on record: [1] Martin (born 1870); [2] Michael (born 1872); [3] Mary (twin) (born 1875); [4] James (twin) (born 1875); [5] Catherine (born 1878); [6] Thomas (born 1884); [7] John (born 1890). Some children might have been missed because the parish registers can be difficult to read. More children might be found using the irishgenealogy.ie website so it's probably time for a second search.

I have quite a lot of info and I'm very happy to share if you care to make contact (flanneryclan@hotmail.com).
