Who later became Fletcher in the U.S. Burry Parish. Mostly settled in the Utica, New York area. Edward Flesh 1844-1898 Joseph Flesh 1845-1897 and their Uncle John Flesh 1812-1892. All were natives of County Meath and all passed away in Utica, New York. Always looking for new information or relations in Ireland.

  • Hi Joe,
A transcription on Roots Ireland lists Edward “Flech,” b. 25 Oct 1840 in parish of Kells. Parents: Edward; Mary "Fitzgerald."
RI also lists Joseph b, 13 Sept 1845. Mother is Mary “Fitzsimons.” Other children are John, James, Michael.

  • Thank you Patricia. I appreciate your response. RI is a great site. I have back to the late 1700's. Not sure if I'll be able to get back much further?, but I'm trying. We caught the surname change from Flesh to Fletcher on RootsIreland. My sister and I kept having dates and parents of what we knew as Fletcher's, appearing on RI as Flesh. Also Flech and Flèche etc. A lesson for everyone that surnames changed often, either by the family or what the census taker heard and wrote down. All I can come up with in our case, is that they felt that Fletcher sounded more " American"? It's always been a mystery, but we were lucky to have caught the Flesh's in their native Ireland. This is one branch of many that I need to post about. Terrence and Jane Smyth O'Brien of County Meath. John and Mary Malone O'Neil of County Kilkenny.  Matthew and Ellen Fagan Murtagh of County Westmeath. James and Bridget Hayes Hornett/Harnett, Co Cork. Patrick and Ellen Sinnott  Devereux of County Wexford.

  • I agree! Variations in names can be very confusing to researchers--surnames AND first names.

I once researched a family called Fox, but sometimes they were listed as Shanahy or McShanahy, which I think is Irish for fox.

  • Hello Joe, I'm researching Casserly name in County Meath and I have a William born in 1839, his mam is Eliza Flesh. They were in the SW area of Meath between Kells and Clonmellon in County Westmeath, do you have an Eliza or Elizabeth in your clan?

    Regards Michael
