I am looking for information about my paternal grandfather's family.  His name was Patrick J Foley, and I believe he was born in 1873 and emigrated to the US around 1910. His parents were John Foley and Mary Mangan or Manning.  I know he had a sister, Ellen Foley Connors who also emigrated to the US, and I believe there was a brother, Thomas, who remained in Ireland.  My dad always told us that his father came from Limerick, but I'm not sure whether he meant just County Limerick or Limerick City. I ahve fornd my paternal grandmother's family, and have visited them near Dingle in County Kerry, but my grabdfather's family has remained somewhat of a mystery.  Thank you in advance for any information you can provide.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Here is the link to the page with Patrick's civil birth record (7th record on page)  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1873/03191/2170263.pdf  At that time, the family was living in Templeathea townland in Rathronan civil parish which is the parish to the west of Ardagh civil parish.

Thes subscription site Roots Ireland had six baptismal records for children of John Foley and Mary Mangan: Helen 1861 Thomas 1864 Bridget 1866 Michael 1870 Patrick 1873 John 1876.

The parents were married in 1859.

  • Thank you, Roger.  My grandparents' marriage certificate here in the US lists my grandfather's mother as Mary Manning, and my great aunt's marriage certificate (my grandfather's sister) lists her mother as Bridget Manning.  Are the pronounciations of Manning and Mangan close enough in Irish English to be mistaken for each other? The rest of the family puzzle does seem to fit, according to my grandfather's obituary which lists a sister, Bridget Foley Connors and a brother, John Foley, both living in Ireland in 1943. Additionally, I know her had the aforementioned sister, Ellen (Helen?) Foley Connor who lived here in the Lowell, Massachusetts where the family settled (and where I grew up).

What would be the best way to find out what happened to my grandfather's siblings?  I know about Ellen. She lived, died, and is buried in Lowell, MA, in the same cemetery as my grandfather (and the rest of the family). However, I'm afraid that someone with the name John Foley will be almost untraceable!

Thank you very much for your help.

    Best,

There is a free Irish governement web site which has images of civil birth, marriage and death records www.irishgenealogy.ie  Births are available 1864-1919 Marriage 1864-1944 Deaths 1864-1877 index records only 1878-1969 actual images. The family was living in Templeathea in 1876 when the youngest son John was born.  I would first try to find the family in the 1901 census http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/  in Co. Limerick. You can also look for possible death records from 1876-1901 for the parents.

I tried to find the marriage record for Bridget Foley Connors with no success.Do you know her husband's first name?
