I've just discovered that my 3 x gt.grandfather, Francis Kenzie, came from Roscommon.  He was born about 1789/1790 according to his army records - first with the Wicklow Militia in 1808, then with the Gordon Highlanders for over 14 years.   His army records were how I found him, but I would love to know when he was born, and who he married. His records say that his birth parish was Roscommon, in the town of Roscommon, in the county of Roscommon!   Anyone any ideas of where I should start looking?  I've looked at a few Roman Catholic registers on the NLI site, but it's like looking for a needle in a haystak!

My 2 x gt.grandmother was also born in Roscommon (Jane Mackenzie) about 1832 but no parish/town known.  I would love to find her birth as well.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The records for the parish of Roscommon town start in 1820 and are available on the subscription site Roots Ireland. I did a number of searches for all of Ireland and did not find a baptismal record for a Jane McKenzie with father Francis. The only McKenzie baptismal records in the 1830s with father Francis were in Co. Tyrone (Sarah and Mary). The mother was Catherine McConnell. Likely Jane and any other siblings were likely baptized in a church which no longer has records back to the 1830s.

Thank you Roger.  I appreciate your having a look for me.  I am aware of the Roots Ireland site but this is a bit pricey and other records are available free on the NLI site.  As I am subscribed to two other Genealogy sites at the moment I am trying to avoid more expense!!!   Your comments re the church records for the church I want, is what I was thinking too.  Still I will persevere for a bit longer.   I do know that both Francis and Jane had moved to Birmingham, England by 1846 and that Francis died there in 1847.   Trouble is that the surname changes in the early days from Kenzie to Kensy/McKenzie/Mackenzie.    Again many thanks for taking the time to check for me.
