My great great grandfather, Frank (Francis) Keenan was born in Aug of 1834 in County Fermanagh to Francis and Ann Keenan. I was wondering if you could help me locate the area in that county where he was born and if he had any siblings. We are planning a trip to Ireland this summer and I would love to see the area where he lived as a child. Census records in the US indicate that he emigrated about 1853-1855. He was Roman Catholic.

Thanks for any help you may be able to provide,

Cheryl Webb

  • In 1834 there were two Keenan men listed as heads of household in the tithe applotment lists for Fermanagh:

--Keenan              James    Ballyhanny          Inishmacsaint     Fermanagh          1834

--Keenan              Roger    Carrickboy           Inishmacsaint     Fermanagh          1834

    See https://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?surname=keenan&firstname=&county=Fermanagh&parish=&townland=&search=Search

In Griffith’s Valuation of Fermanagh in 1862, there were 94 heads of household named Keenan. There were some Anns and some Francises.  To search further, go to askaboutireland.ie.

There are no civil records before 1864.  I did not find the Keenans in the church records on RootsIreland.ie.

Is it possible a U.S. record gives his townland of origin? For example, headstone, obituary/death notice, will, his marriage record, his death record, his children's birth/baptismal records. You might find it there.
