I am looking for

Fanny Gaile or Gale b: Abt 1822 in Co Carlow?, Ireland?

She married Frederick Edward Falkiner (prolly in Australia).

Her son Charles is my great great grandfather, and he married Moetu Taui in New Zealand in 1884.

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Unfortunately, it will be difficult to find out information on Fanny without a more specific place of origin. Most Irish record sources- church records, land records, census records- are based on specific locations. Until you know a specific location within Ireland, preferably a parish or placename, it may be difficult to do anything more with these records.

Do you have any documentation pertaining to the family that mentions any place names at all? This can include wills, marriage/death records, census records, letters, diary entries etc.

Have you tried looking into Fanny?s emigration to see if you can find more information there, in particular a place name? The University of Woolongong has produced, on microfiche, a complete index and transcript of all information concerning immigrants of Irish origin recorded on ships' passenger lists between 1848 and 1867. These are useful for finding out an exact place of origin as well as parents' names. The Public Record Office of Victoria has good online databases of settlers at www.prov.vic.gov.au

Also, Irish Genealogy have uploaded Carlow?s Church of Ireland records to their websites free of charge. If Fanny followed the C of I you may be able to find some records relating to her family here, which would give you a parish name in addition to parents names etc.:

    http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/

www.familysearch.org also have some Irish baptism and marriage records available

www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish church records available however you have to pay to use this site.

You could also try searching for the surname Gale/Gaile in Griffith?s Valuation. This was a property valuation survey that was carried out in Ireland 1848-1864. It doesn't give any genealogical information but can sometimes be used to tie a person to a specific place. This will be easier to do if you know Fann?s father?s names or the names of any possible brothers etc. I already did a search for Gale and this is what came back:

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch&Submit.x=-1212&Submit.y=-562&Submit=Submit&familyname=gale&firstname=First+Name&baronyname=&countyname=CARLOW&unionname=&parishname=

Some other websites that you may find useful are:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

    Genealogy links: http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/carlow/index.html

    The Irish Times: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/#Carlow

Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

    Kind regards,

  • This is starting to look like a little bit of alright, out of the http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/

Baptism of FRANCES GALE of N/R

    on 14 November 1819

    Parish/Church/Congregation - CARLOW

    Area - CARLOW (COI)

It looks like she had an older sister of the same name (Fanny), baptised 9th February 1807. That is what the other record seems to be. See if I can find a death.

I think I now need to find the death and marriage records for Frderick Falkiner out of Australia.

Her interment at Ethlam Cemetery in Eltham, Victoria, Australia says "15/09/1888  (Mrs)
Falkiner 66  2574" - that is, seems to suggest she was born in 1821/2 - but obviously somewhere someone got the age wrong ...

So there is still some discrepancy there, but this looks like it might be the right person.

See if I can find a shipping record
