Galvin family

The records for Abbeyknockmoy/Monivea RC parish start in 1821 for baptisms and 1844 for marriages and are available on the subscription site Roots Ireland. Michael and Mary were born pre-1821 so no record of their baptisms would be available. Also, their marriage would have occurred before 1844 so no marriage reocrd would be available.

The only record I could find was an April 1 1842 baptismal record in Abbeyknockmoy. Father was Michael and mother was Mary Heavy. Unfortunately, no name for the child was provided. Maybe the name was faint and could not be transcribed. One sponsor was shown--Anne Galvin likely a sister to Michael.

In 1855 in Griffith's Valuation of Galway there was one head of household in Monivea named Galvin:

While you mentioned your Galvins emigrated in 1849, it is quite possible the 1855 Galvins are relatives.

I have checked through my research and Michael & Mary Galvin did have a child called Patrick who was born in 1842, which I have checked from the 1851 census.

I can't locate an Anne Galvin. I did wonder if family members still exist in the area.

There were also other children born in Ireland most of them recorded on the census: Sarah (1840) Bridget (1845) Doha (1845) Delia (1845) and Margaret (1951) aged 3 months old. Suggests it was early 1851 when they migrated to Lancashire. Doha and Delia do not appear on the 1851 census. Wondered if they had triplets?

The name Heavy is recorded as that spelling on the census records, but family info passed down has it spelt Heavey. Was there a variation in the surname?

I have looked further back for Michael's and Mary's parents and found records that might match for Michael's parents as: Patt & Honoria Galvin from 29 Castle & Spiddlegate, Athenry, Galway and Mary's parents as: James & Rose Heavey (with an e) from Correnarty, Kinawley, Cavan. This was from the 1821 Ireland census and the age gap between Michael & Mary seem to match, although I can't take them as accurate when recorded.

Any further information would be most welcome as I have now built up a very comprehensive family tree. My Irish roots which are very strong on my DNA test has really caught my interest and attention.

Also, any information on the Abbey at Abbeyknockmoy would be interesting as I also have a very keen interest in heritage.

Unfortunately, the parish register for Abbeyknockmoy/Monivea parish was not microfilmed by the National Library of Ireland when other parish registers were microfilmed in the 1950s. As a result, we do not have an online register to review. Possibly some of the baptisms were held in Athenry where the records start in 1858.

Like most Irish surnames, there are more than one way of spelling Heavy/Heavey. 

I would be hesitant to use the Cavan records from the 1821 census. I can see a Patt Heavy in the 1827 Tithe listings for Athenry parish.
