Hello,

Am asking for a bit of help. Attached please find 1846 baptism record for Peter Malley (top right side of page). The Ancestry record is from 1833-1845 baptisms, Rahoon Parish, Galway Diocese. I'm so far unable to identify the village or townland included with this record. As I read it, it seems to be Slievrough, and I will add that there are several other records for this same family, in the same group of records, each with the same place of residence, spelled the very same way. I've included this specific record because the overall page is a bit more clear than some of the others. Can anyone help identify whether Slievrough is a village, hamlet, townland? I find a later census record, Ireland Census1901, Letteragh, Galway West Urban, County Galway, for this family in question, if that helps with the general area for the family. It's the location or residence, Slievrough that is the location I'm trying to find.

In advance, please accept my thanks, and/or suggestions about where I might search.

  • Thank you so very much, Patricia. Looking on townlands.ie, I see Slieveroe in Killora Civil Parish, Kilkerrin Civil Parish, and Killursa. I'll begin there and hopefully find my surname among Griffith's or 1901 Ireland Census records.

Again my thanks for your help. It is very much appreciated.

    Mollie,

Can you please confirm the name of the family that you are researching.

I attach a copy of the townland of Letteragh which shows the name "Gort an Sleibhe" which could be translated as "Hill Field". From the Glenlo Abbey Hotel towards Barna is high ground. Many changes have taken place in that general area over the years.

  • The 1846 baptism record I attached is for Peter, child of Michael Malley and Bridget Lydon. This family has several children, each showing the place of residence as "Slievrough." The kind reply above suggests it is Slieveroe. I attached that particular record because the written word "Slievrough" is a bit more legible than on some of the other baptism records. I hope that make sense. As I look through this particular set of records, I find 3 Malley/O'Malley families with the place of residence as "Slievrough." It is the family of Patrick Malley/O'Malley and Mary Madden, with children born from about 1840-1866, place of residence also shown as "Slievrough" that I am researching. This Malley/O'Malley and Madden family is one with whom I have a DNA connection, thus my research interest.

My great thanks for the help IRO has given me in my search of this family and the place of residence.
