According to family history, my ancestor Michael Gannon died in 1848 and was buried at St. Canice's Church in Kilkenny. My wife and I visited Kilkenny last month and discovered that there is no cemetery at the Catholic church. There is a cemetery at St. Canice's Cathedral up the hill. The Cathedral is Church of Ireland, whereas the Church is Catholic, as was Michael. I am confused as to where he might have been buried, and whether or not there is any way to discover his internment.

Any help or comments would be appreciated.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

It was great that you could visit Ireland and Kilkenny specifically. Your ancestor died during the Great Hunger period so records may not be available. Also, sometimes RC folks were buried in the Church of Ireland cemtery. We do have a parish liaison for another parish in Kilkenny city and I will alert her to your message. If you have not heard back in about ten days, please let me know.

  • Hi Terry!

I would suggest you contact the Kilkenny library and see if they have any suggestions. Monday is a bank holiday so they will not be open until Tuesday.
