I've been trying (without much success) to trace my Irish family. My grandmother Norah Geoghegan was born around 1903 but sadly I don't know where. I do know that she moved to London and worked in domestic service.  There she met and married my grandfather William Henry Hale. According to their marriage certificate Norah's father was William Geoghegan, occupation Farmer.

My mother's memories of my grandmother were very sketchy as Norah died in 1940 when my mother was only 7 years old, but she always maintained that there was a family link with Lismore.

Does anybody have any knowledge of the Geoghegan family? I'd be grateful for any information, however small.

I looked at civil birth records from 1897-1904 for a Nora Geoghegan. I located one possible lead---  a Hanora Gahagan from Doon Co. Tipperary. Father was William and mother was Mary Brown.

See third record from the bottom. https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…

Lismore would be in Co. Waterford and where Doon is located is not far from Co. Waterford.

You would need the mother's name for Nora to confirm the record above. Do you know the names of any siblings to Nora?

I believe this is the 1911 census record for the family related to the birth record.

  • Thanks very much for the reply Roger. I think you may very well have come up with the answer to my elusive search.

I'd come across this family before in the 1901 and 1911 censuses, but I was thrown by Hanora's age. However, the birth record that you found shows her birth date as 20th December 1900 and the UK 1939 Register shows her birth date as 20th December 1903. Potential Result?

There is a link here to Lismore. Mary Browne was born in Co. Waterford and she and William Geoghegan were married in the first quarter of 1893 in Lismore.

Not sure how I'm going to prove it, but after a few years of searching I feel that I'm a step closer, thanks to you.
