My ancestor is Patrick Geoghegan of Mountmellick. He was born 1830. His father was Thomas and his mother was probably Mary Cody alias Mary Horohan. I am trying to trace any of his brothers or sisters who may have survived the famine. He left for Bradford England in 1846 and married a Julia Delaney there

  • Hi

Heritage Week in Mountmellick takes place from the 17th - 25th August 2013.  You'll find it as a Gathering event at http://www.thegatheringireland.com/View-Gatherings/Individual-Gathering/Mountmellick-A-Tapestry-of-History/17%20August%202013/3522

It includes a number of talks and tours - one of which is a Famine Tour (Thursday 22nd August).  This visits a nearby famine workhouse museum, comes back to Mountmellick through the famine grave sites and on to the Mountmellick Workhouse which is now a hospital for the elderly.  It will finish with tea in the town and a small exhibition on the famine and survivors of the famine/workhouse.

Over the Saturday & Sunday there will also be exhibitions in the town - one on the heritage of Mountmellick.  This includes a 'board' for people trying to research their ancestry in Mountmellick.  Locals from Mountmellick will be assisting with the research and where possible will show people around the town - where their ancestors lived, any relations still living in the town, etc.

A local lady named Ciss Geoghegan completed a study on the Mountmellick Workhouse.  She will be at the exhibitions and possibly also on the Famine Tour.  I will contact her to see if there is any cross over between her family and yours using the information you have provided above.  We will also place your details on the 'board' and do some local research on your behalf.

I note you posted your query in December.  If you have since come across any further information, please do let us know.

    Kind regards

    Mary

  • Hello Mary

Thank you for the information on the Gathering in Mountmellick. I would love to attend, but it may be difficult for me because of scheduling conflicts.I have read a fair bit on the history of Mountmellick and I would be very keen to do the tours that are planned.I will have to see if I could possibly get there.

I have done a lot of research into the history of all the Geoghegans of Mountmellick. Enough to know that there were several branches living in various townlands in the Mountmellick area. There were about 3 or 4 Thomas Geoghegans who married and had offspring in the early 1800s and late 1700s. I have seen all of the parish records from Rosenallis and Mountmellick parishes on microfilm. The Patrick Geoghegan that fits my information best was born to Mary Horohan in 1830. She had been married to a man named Cody previously. Patrick had sisters named Anne ,Honora, and brothers James and Michael all born between 1828 and 1839. There may have been more but these were the ones in the records. Apparently, Patrick's parents both perished in the famine but I can find no record of their deaths. Patrick left Ireland supposedly with his brother Jimmy and went to the textile city of Bradford,Yorkshire in England. I have been trying to find what happened to his other siblings, but no luck so far.

There has been no way to trace Thomas Geoghegan's parents because the parish records have a gap from @1780 to 1814 which is just when he and any siblings would have been born. I would appreciate any information on any of the Geoghegans from the area and especially from my specific ancestors. also, I have recorded all the early Geoghegan families and would be happy to share any info I have. I would love to here from Ciss Geoghegan if she has any information.

Thanks again,Mary, for getting back to me.

    Best Wishes, Steve
