Giants Grove - Redwoods come to Birr!

Launched in April 2017 by Uachtaráin Michael D Higgins, Giants Grove is creating in the grounds of Birr Castle the largest grove of redwood trees outside of California. This voluntary initiative is a partnership between Birr Castle and Crann - Trees for Ireland, www.crann.ie.  These trees were native to Ireland before the Ice Age 3 million years ago. Their return to Ireland will symbolise the hopes and thoughts of our diaspora abroad, as we plant one thousand giant and coastal redwoods to acknowledge your family members. Sponsors are now coming forward to name trees for their loved ones, living and dead, and these trees and their memories will live on for over one thousand years. Redwoods in California are now threatened by droughts and fire. Our Grove will offer a living, breathing record to celebrate births, weddings and the passing of loved ones. They will contribute to the greening and cleaning of Ireland's air, while creating a wildlife haven in the quiet of Birr Castle grounds. We invite you to sponsor a redwood.
