I am researching the ancestry of my great grandmother, Mary Ellen Gibbons. Her grandfather, Jeffrey Gibbons may have been born in or near Aghagower circa 1828, emigrating to the US with his brother, Austin in 1853. Their father was John Gibbons (born 1800), married to Katherine/Kate (maiden name unknown). On a trip to Ireland last fall I went to the Aghagower cemetery looking for information but there are so many Gibbons there and the stones are quite deteriorated.
Jeffrey was married to Sarah Ellen McGuire of County Cork.
Any assistance will be appreciated as I've only found this information on ancestry.com and it's easy to get confused with the many other families with like names.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The baptismal records for Aghagower RC parish start in April 1828. I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland for Gibbons baptismal records with father John and mother Catherine. I found an 1831 Austin Gibbons record (see below). There were also records for four siblings:Michael 1830 Mary 1832 Honor 1834 John 1835. Looks like the mother was also a Gibbons.

The townland was likely the current day Cordarragh North or Cordarragh South

Not sure what name Jeffrey would have been given at baptism. I assume he was born before April 1828?

  • Thank you very much. I really appreciate you taking the time to research this for me.

It is my understanding that Austin and Jeffrey were twins and I have birth dates anywhere from 1828 to 1823. There is a passenger manifest indicating emigration in 1953 that lists their age as 20. However a local newspaper in the US describes a reunion of the brothers in 1903 at age 75, so I'm leaning toward 1828. At the reunion brother Michael was 73 and John 68.
The information you found appears to match these dates/ages.

  • Where would I find the passenger manifest of Austin and Jeffrey’s emigration to America?

    Thank you

  • Katherine:

There are no Irish records of ship departures around 1850. Possibly there may be a record maintained on Ancestry of possibly familysearch.org however, records around 1850 are sparse.
