Hello

Thank you in advance for any info you can give me.

We have been told that the Gilmore family came from Scotland to Ireland during the reign of King James I and stayed until the early 1700's.  James and his wife Isabella and sons, William and James came to America and settled in Pelham, New Hampshire.  I do not know Isabella's surname.  I believe they came from Londonderry.  James was born in 1685 and Isabella in 1687.  James is my 7th Great Grandfather.

Thank you,

Cheryl Heide

  • Hi Cheryl, I am looking at unanswered queries and initially must say that Scotland and Ireland have a lot of migration both ways, at the closest it is a distance of 13 miles.

According to McLysaghts Surnames of Ireland it is found in Ulster and mainly County Down, there is a very good website for Down Genealogy. It says the Ulster Gilmore is Mc Giolla Mhuire (Mhuire is Mary) and there are devotees of the Virgin Mary, while in Sligo it is from McGiolla Mhir (Mear means lively) take your pick. the Ulster sept (Gaelic Irish for Clan) is from O'Morna possibly the present day Murney.

The was a lot of migration to Ireland from Scotland to practice freedom of religion for the various Presbyterian groups in the 1600s, aobut 100 years later there was a crackdown in Ireland which led to migration to the US of the so called Scotch Irish. There is a visitor centre near Omagh
