My great grandfather was William Johnston Gilmore [1842-1933] of the Rockhead Farm, Boveedy. He was one of eleven children [most of whom emigrated to New Zealand] born to William and Elizabeth Gilmore who married in 1840. Elizabeth's maiden name was also Gilmore; she was born nearby at Blackrock Farm, Boveedy - perhaps she and William were cousins?
William Johnston Gilmore went to the Royal University of Ireland, originally studying science. He became the Presbyterian Minister at Newton Crommelin, Co Antrim where he ministered for 46 years.
Happy to hear from anyone researching this family!

Hi, I've just joined this site and don't really know my way around it yet, so apologies if I'm giving you information you've already got from someone else.
Did you know that there's a family of Gilmores still living at Rockhead farm in Boveedy? At least, I think they still own and work the farm, though they no longer live in the original farmhouse but in a new bungalow nearby. The man who runs the farm is called Johnston(e) Gilmore; his mother lives with them but is now in her 90s.
Their address is:
10 Boveedy Road,
Kilrea,
County Londonderry,
N Ireland
BT51 5XTTelephone no: 02829541153
I hope this information is of use to you. I'm originally from Boveedy, but now live 15 miles away in Coleraine. My mother lived there for 60 years until her recent death.

Dear Kate
I was very excited to see your photo of Rev. William Johnstone Gilmore and also his wife Ann Strahan Alexander. Thank you so very much for posting these photos
William Johnstone Gilmore's father, also William Gilmore (10 Sep 1807 - 14 Apr 1888) and my 2nd great grandmother Mary Gilmore were brother and sister. I think we must share a common ancestor in William Gilmrore and Nancy Johnston
I reside in Invercargill, Southland, New Zealand.
Below is my direct ancestry
William Gilmore ( - 1819) & Nancy Johnston are my 3rd great grandparent
- Mary Gilmore (1813 - 1861) daughter of William Gilmore. Mary married Robert Woods who was born about 1808 in Kilrea (or possibly Garvagh)
- Samuel Gilmour Woods (1861 - 1937) son of Mary Gilmore & Robert Woods
- Elsie Isobel Woods (1906 - 1996) m. Harold Affleck
- Charles Woods Affleck (1932 - 1999)
- Charles Brent Affleck
- Charles Woods Affleck (1932 - 1999)
- Elsie Isobel Woods (1906 - 1996) m. Harold Affleck
- Samuel Gilmour Woods (1861 - 1937) son of Mary Gilmore & Robert Woods
For some strange reason Gilmore became 'Gilmour' here in New Zealand when Samuel Gilmour Woods immigrated to New Zealand along with three brothers. They became very well establish farmers here in Southland and remained in contact with the Gilmores who settled in New Zealand
Kate, again thank you so very much. I welcome communication if you feel inclined.
Yours
Charles Affleck
- Mary Gilmore (1813 - 1861) daughter of William Gilmore. Mary married Robert Woods who was born about 1808 in Kilrea (or possibly Garvagh)

Hello Charles,
I apologise for not replying to your message sooner - I've only just come across it whilst browsing through the site again. My fault entirely for not ticking the box that allows one to be notified of any messages!
Yes, we are 4th cousins. You're correct that my William and your Mary were siblings and the children of William Gilmore who married Nancy Johnston on 17 Feb 1805. I already had your grandparents (Harold and Elsie) recorded, courtesy of another Gilmore descendant.
If you'd like to email me at coolshanagh@aol.com, I can organise your access to my family tree.
Best wishes,
Kate

Hello Dawni,
I apologise for not replying to you sooner but I hadn't ticked the box allowing me to receive message alerts. I only just found your really useful information while browsing the site.
I shall be spending a few days in NI in early May with my two sisters so we may contact the family at the Rockhead. It would be wonderful to meet them if they're interested. Two of us passed through the village about fifteen years ago to visit the churchyard; our other sister has never been to Ireland so we're very excitied about it.
With best wishes and thanks,
Kate

Hello Charles,
I am researching my Nan's maternal family line, the Johnstons from Ballymaconnelly townland in Finvoy. We have multiple family DNA matches with Gilmore Woods on FamilyTree DNA and one on Gedmatch.
We believe these matches are coming through your Nancy Johnston. Do you have any information on her that you would be inclined to share?
Regards
Robert

My Great Granny Gilmour lived in Boveedy. My Grandmother Rita Gilmore married William Patterson. The photograph I attached is of My Granny Patterson with her brothers.

Hello,
Samuel Gilmore is a name which has taken its place in the scientific literature, as he was the discoverer of the main mass of the Bovedy (which is the more common spelling) Meteorite in 1969:
https://www.meteoritehistory.info/UKIRELAND/NEIRE.HTM#bovedy
It would be interesting to know of his subsequent history.
Bovedy remains the last meteorite to have fallen in Northern Ireland.
Thank you.
