I am trying to do a family tree for my husband's , Samuel Ross Alexander Gilmore, 60 th birthday.

His father was Thomas Alexander Gilmore 28th September 1928. He moved to Western Australia to work in Kalgoorlie Goldmines. He passed away on the 12th October 1986. His brother's  Robert and Samuel also emmigrated to Australia with him and are both deceased.

Thomas was born to Robert Gilmore and Margaret (Maggie) McAllister. His siblings were James, Rita, Samuel, Robert, Stuart and possibly Elizabeth.

The photo attached to this post has a small male family member who has a strong resemblance to my husband Samuel. My mother in law is still alive but very elderley and her memory is not the best. She has stated that the Gilmores were at Rockhead farm and they were definitely from Boveedy.  I know that one of my husband's Aunts married into the Patterson family so I am hoping that Rita Patterson is his Aunt.

We were in Northern Ireland a few years ago and spent time with James and Audrey Patterson and another cousin Colin.

I am hoping that I can get some details to do his ancestry tree.  Thanks in advance.

The Belfast Telegraph of 1st May 1969 reports that a Samuel Gilmore of Rockhead, Bovedy found a fragment of a meteorite on his farm. (See attached article).

    Here’s Robert & Maggie’s marriage in 1920: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_re…

I found some probate abstracts on the PRONI wills site which may relate to your family:

Gilmore William of Bovedy county Londonderry farmer died 22 August 1934 Administration Belfast 26 September to Tillie McCracken married woman. Effects £23.

Gilmore Mary of Bovedy county Londonderry widow died 30 January 1937 Probate Belfast 5 March to Tillie McCracken married woman. Effects £135 2s. 8d.

Gilmore Lizzie of Bovedy county Londonderry spinster died 13 February 1944 Probate Belfast 21 March to Hugh McCracken farmer. Effects £73.

Gilmore James of Hillhead Bovedy Kilrea county Londonderry farmer died 11 February 1955 at Bannview Hospital Coleraine county Londonderry Probate Belfast 10 May to Samuel James Kerr retired farmer. Effects £261 17s. 6d.

The above wills are not on-line. They are held in PRONI in paper format. You need to go in person to view them or pay PRONI (or a researcher) to copy them.

In 1911 there were several Gilmore families living in Bovedy. They may all be related but work would be needed to find out how: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/Hervey_Hil…

The 1920 marriage certificate tells us Robert's father was James. There are 2 James G’s in the 1911 census:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/Hervey_Hil…

I wonder if this is Robert in 1911 working away from home: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/The_Grove/…

This could be Robert in the 1901 census:

    This may be his birth:

    Parents marriage in 1876:

This looks like Robert’s mother’s death in 1902:

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1902/05697/4606463.pdf

Robert looks to have had the following siblings:

    Un-named male 1876

    Thomas 1879

    Elizabeth 1883

    Maggie 1884

    John 1886

    William 1888

    James 1892

    Jane 1893

    Annie 1896

The Gilmore/Gilmour family probably attended Bovedy Presbyterian church. PRONI has a copy of their records as follows:

Boveedy Baptisms, 1841-1929; marriages, 1842-1929; session minutes, 1842-1925; accounts, 1855-80; communicants’ roll, 1857-70 and 1888-1929.

The records aren’t on-line so far as I am aware, and so a personal visit is required to view them. If you are unable to go yourself, you could employ a researcher. Researchers in the PRONI area: http://sgni.net

GRONI is the only repository for birth, death and marriage records in what is now Northern Ireland, from 1.1.1922 onwards. (Ancestry and other websites don’t have them). Births in Northern Ireland within the past 100 years, marriages within the past 75 and deaths within the past 50 aren’t searchable on-line. They are open to the public, just not on-line. If you know all the key details eg exact date and place of birth, parents names etc, you can order a copy of a certificate from GRONI for £15. https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk But if you don’t have all the information, you need to get in touch with them to get a search done. They will do a 5 year search for £7 and if they find a matching certificate you can purchase it for £8, coming to a total of £15. It will be posted to you a few days later. You pay over the phone using a credit card. You type your number in on the phone keypad. They don’t know what it is. They won’t deal with these searches and orders by e-mail because they need you to type the credit card number in yourself. Phone: 0300 200 7890 (+44 300 200 7890 from outside the UK)

  • Thank you very much. This has helped a lot .
Hopefully I can get some information from relatives there but it will be a slow process as I don't have email addresses for them.

  • Some of the Gilmores that Elwyn has listed are not the same as your family (lots of Gilmores in Boveedy townland).

Robert Gilmore (1890-1966) “Clydeholm” Boveedy married Margaret Ann “Maggie” McAlister (c1900-1997 from near Dunluce. Daughter Margaret Jean “Rita” married Patterson. Robert’s parents were James Gilmore (son of Samuel) & Jane Paul. Family originally connected to Straw Presbyterian Church near Draperstown. The family must also have attended Churchtown Presbyterian Church as there are baptisms there for some children. Later lived various townlands such as Drumlane, Tivaconway, Hervey Hill & Killygullib.

  • My father in law was Thomas Alexander Gilmore dob 28th September 1928.

His birth certificate lists his father as Robert Gilmore and mother was Margaret (Maggie) McAllister.

I am wondering what information Elwyn has provided is incorrect?

  • The following records are not your Gilmores (or at least not closely related in the last 100 or more years)-

The Belfast Telegraph of 1st May 1969 reports that a Samuel Gilmore of Rockhead, Bovedy found a fragment of a meteorite on his farm. (See attached article).

Gilmore William of Bovedy county Londonderry farmer died 22 August 1934 Administration Belfast 26 September to Tillie McCracken married woman. Effects £23.

Gilmore Mary of Bovedy county Londonderry widow died 30 January 1937 Probate Belfast 5 March to Tillie McCracken married woman. Effects £135 2s. 8d.

Gilmore Lizzie of Bovedy county Londonderry spinster died 13 February 1944 Probate Belfast 21 March to Hugh McCracken farmer. Effects £73.

This James Gilmore was uncle of your Thomas Alexander Gilmore-

Gilmore James of Hillhead Bovedy Kilrea county Londonderry farmer died 11 February 1955 at Bannview Hospital Coleraine county Londonderry Probate Belfast 10 May to Samuel James Kerr retired farmer. Effects £261 17s. 6d.

In addition to Robert’s siblings that Elwyn posted there was a Samuel (1877), Alexander (1881), James (1885)
