I am looking for info on the family of Daniel and Mary Sheehan (née Bergin), and their children Daniel, John, Honora, Bridget and Julia. It is thought that John may have emigrated to Victoria, Australia during the 1850's.They may have had a farm in Glenahoglisha, Ballylanders. Their daughter Honora married a man named John Power, and they had a son also named John Power. Their daughter Julia (my ggg grandmother) married a man named William Long, or possibly John William long. They had three daughters named Johanna, Mary and Catherine. They women emigrated to Chicago in the 1880's, but it is unclear whether William did also or whether he died in Ireland.  Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

She was the child of William LongandJudy Sheehan.
This info is from a transcription on RootsIreland.ie. There's at least one other child for this couple.
    I hope this helps.

Civil registration did not begin until 1864.

According to the subscription site Roots Ireland church baptismal records for Ballylanders RC parish start in 1842 and marriage records start in 1848. However, according to the NLI site baptismal records start in March 1849 and marriage records in January 1857.  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0244

The 1850 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Ballylanders civil parish showed a Daniel Sheehan in Glennahaglish townland in Ballylanders parish  https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/limerick/ballylanders.htm

In addition to the baptismal record that Patricia located for Johanna Long there was a record for Mary Long  in March 25 1862 Ballylanders RC parish. Also, Catherine was born in 1864 and her civil record was available.

    third record Catherine  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…

The Long family was living in Fahanasoodry townland in Ballylanders civil parish.

I located a death recprd for Daniel Sheehan in 1884

    fourth record    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…

I did not find a good lead for a death record for Mary Sheehan. I also did not find good leads for William and Julia Long. Possibly they also went to America.

John Sheehan my Great Grandfather son of Daniel Sheehan and Mary Sheehan nee Bergin emigrated to Victoria Australia mid 1850's from Ballylanders .

I believe that John followed his uncle Patrick Bergin to Victoria both settling in Hamilton Victoria .John becoming a farmer and Patrick an Inn Keeper.

I know of three sisters to John  Honora Bridget and Julia.

John married Maria Doyle daughter of James Conway Doyle and Julia O'Leary in Hamilton on the 9th May 1865.Maria was born in Bansha County Tipperary.

    They had 9 children.

John died in Hamilton 19th September1874 aged 41.I have a marriage record Parish of Galbally/Aherlow for Daniel Sheehan and Mary Bergin 16 02 1824,witnessed by William Bergin and Mary Magner

  • Thank you SO much! I had the baptismal records for the three Long sisters, but I didn't have the Griffiths, the death info on Daniel Sheehan, nor the emigration and family info on John Sheehan. I had imagined that John may have been transported as punishment to Australia, but do you believe he went of his own free will? I am not absolutely sure that these particular Sheehans are my ancestors, but the clues seem to fit. Time to research more using your information. Thank you very much!
