Good Family - Brinny, Castlenalact, Bandon

By way of known dates:

a.  Horatio - born (1 sources - 1831, another 1841),  Married Catharine Duke (Bengour East) -  1874

b.  William Good - born ~1876 - arrived in Canada 1902.

For reference - the marriage took place in the Church of Ireland at Murragh, residence for Horatio is shown as Castlebrack (Brinny civil parish), his occupation farmer, residence for the bride as Bengour (Murragh civil parish). Father's names Thomas Good and William Duke.

There very few Church of Ireland records online at the moment, transcripts for some parishes in North East Co. Cork are included on RootsIreland (pay-website)

Unfortunately is seems the original historic records for Brinney Church of Ireland parish were lost, but there are some transcripts available in the Representative Church Body Library Co. Dublin, and also some records on Microfilm in the National Archives Dublin city.

The details noted for the parish on the latest RCB Parish list : "3 volumes of parish registers, comprising baptisms 1797-1876, marriages 1797-1847 & burials 1797-1877, were destroyed in the fire in the Public Record Office of Ireland in 1922"

William seems to have left home sometime before 1901 - no sign of him at Castlenalact with his parents and siblings on the 1901 census. William's mother Catherine nee Duke died in 1903, and Horatio and two sons and a daughter appear at Castlenalact in 1911.

Griffith's Primary Valuation records, dated 1851 for this area, show a Thomas Good leasing a house, offices (i.e. stables, workshops etc) and reasonably large plot of land consisting of just over 55 acres in Castlealact townland from the Duke of Devonshire. Thomas also sub-leases two house to a Richard White and Margaret Desmond.

Thank you for the respons - that's as far as I've been to uncover as well - I'm hoping to visit Ireland in 2021 - and spend some time in that area to look at the local records if available.

In my effort to track down a Good family from Castlenalact, Brinny I saw your post.

I am from Canada and have a John Good in my family tree. He married a Catherine Bateman in 1830 in Rathclaren Parish. Their child Catherine Good married my Great Grandfather Thomas Jennings and so on......

The reason I became interested in this side of the family at this time is because of a letter. I was given access to a letter that was found in a shed on a Jennings property in New Brunswick that may be from a Thomas Good of Castlenalact. It is to a "John" and signed from a brother "Tho". It speaks of Brinny and other places nearby. It even mentions the Fenians. It was written in 1866.

Hoping you have more information on these Goods. I think they may be connected to us.

I too am in Canada.  In my limited research I've not yet made a "direct" connection to the New Brunswick "Goods" - however, my father (now passed) used to talk about a branch of the Ireland family that went west (British Columbia) and a branch that went east (Atlantic Canada).  I've attempted to find links to the New Bandon settlement in New Brunswick as many of the Bandon Ireland immigrants settled there.   There was a William Good (same name as my father) who had a somewhat unpleasant disposition according to records (committed murder) in New Brunswick - I've tried to find out if there is any connection through that link - but nothing definitive yet.  I would love to hear more about the "letter" you accessed.

My tree (work in progress) is accessible in Ancestry.ca - I'm pretty confident in it up to my GGF- Horatio - his father (according to church records(2)) was Thomas Good and his wife's name was "Anne" (unsubstantiated at this time).

Anything you can share would be much appreciated.

I do have a "Jennings" through a Jane Good who married a Bradfield in Ireland - not sure if there is a link?- I've uploaded a screenshot of the portion of the tree with that  link indicated.

I am in Cole Harbour. Have you looked at the Sharon Haggerty research on the Bateman Family? She passed away in 2016 but left a huge amount of research. If you select Good from the family names our stuff is there. I can send a link if you can't locate it. We are in the Charles Bateman/ Martha Ellis family. You will find the infamous Robert Good story in there.....he murdered a Jennings!

We are into the Batemans big time and our Goods are too.I keep getting related to myself as I search backwards.

I will look at that Jennings connection. A book was written on Jennings of Cork but there are many John Jennings and they married cousins so it is a tangle of names. I am dna connected to the author of the book though so I know somebody in my family came form there. lol

I have been to Ireland 3 times and spent a week last fall in Drinagh where I think the Jennings originated. I did not know when I booked a place that it was on an old Jennings property called "the Rock". One great resource in Cork is the Skibbereen Heritage centre. We went there to see the Famine Display and through the conversations about searching for relatives I was introduced to Margaret Murphy, an expert  in making connections. As it turns out she lives in Drinagh. That evening she picked me up at the rental and drove me around the area showing me the grave yards and the townlands. Imagine that! Ireland is a wonderful place. I felt at home there.

Well - I have a good friend in Cole Harbour - and - we have a cottage in Tatamagouche (North Shore).

I will look into your suggestions later this month and see what I can find.   "Thomas Good" of Castlelanact is the "mystery" guy for me - I can't seem to find out anything and nothing on his wife "Anne".  So much fun digging.

Yes - Ireland is wonderful - my wife and I were there a couple of years ago - Dublin and Belfast primarily - hope to go again and this time spend some time in the south (Cork/Bandon area)

I've located a document from a gentleman in Ireland that shows Jennie Good (my G-Aunt) married to a William Bryan Bradfield = they had a son John Horace Bradfield - married to a Margaret Jennings (~1945) in Ireland - not sure if there is a connection to your Jennings branch.

Hello Michael & John Good , I have only just come across your messages about the Good Family from Brinny Posted in 2020 . My husbands family are connected to these & can be found in my tree under the name of 20 England on Ancestry . I thinking this might fill in some of your gaps. Also I think I have a copy of a letter from Canada sent to one of my husbands ancestors .
