Gorman/Sheppard

I checked Roots Ireland and I located three Gorman baptismal records in Cloughjordan RC with a father John and the mother was Anne Armitage. The 1838 record was for a Margaret Gorman and she had two younger siblings: Catherine 1840 and James 1842. Any chance your Mary was baptzied Margaret? See transcription record below.

I checked the online Irish phone book which is a partial list of phone users and did not see any Gormans around Cloughjordan. Most were in South Tipperary.

Thanks for checking this for me.  That's fantastic.  There could be a chance she was Christened Margaret. 

That's brilliant. I really appreciate your help.  I'll follow this lead and see where it takes me. 

I'd drawn so many blanks over the past while trying to trace her.  There are a few of my relatives (mother included) who are named Margaret, but also were called Mary, so it is a strong possibility.

Roger did some excellant searching for you . . . and well done to him . . 

As I am in Tipperary . . close to Cloughjordan ( Ireland's Eco Village ). . I took a particular interest in your query . . . 

Attached find . . some original material from the RC baptismal books of the time . . . 

The reference to the Armitage name ( still very prevelent in the area ). . . is taken from a recording of property holders 1823 - 1837 known as . . 

" Tithes Applotment "     http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?…

Roger  ( above ) lists the Townsland as . . . Kyleaneska . . . . which does NOT exactly fit with the Tithes location of the Armitage family listed. . 

On an Ordnance Map .. of the time . . I fail to find the townsland of Kyleaneska . . . but . . someone in the Village may point to it . . .

Perhaps the Kyleaneska Roger found is Kileshenane.  According to the Tithe book it is around Modreeny.  That's where my great-grandmother is buried.

I've discovered something interesting.   On my great-grandmother's wedding certificate the witness is down as Margaret Gorman. 

As they are both born in 1838, I'm wondering if they were twins (or maybe cousins)

Thanks Eamonn,  I'd forgotten about the Tipperary Studies site.  It's fantastic. 

My great-grandfather James Sheppard is buried there too.  My cousin arranged to have a new headstone unveiled to them both on the 100th anniversary of his death in 2014 which we all attended.

I have been trying to research his father and anyone before him.  It's been difficult too because he was born in 1834.  I also believe that he was born C of I, and converted to Catholicism when he married my great-grandmother Mary Gorman.  There is no record of him being baptised a Catholic.  It's a very interesting case I think.

I also have James Sheppard and Mary Gorman in my tree. Yesterday (Oct 27 2018) I did a lot of work in filling out specific dates and trying to trace people backwards and forwards in time. My tree is Kerns-Keyes on Ancestry. My connection to the Sheppard family comes from Patrick Sheppard's wife, Anastasia McBride, who was the daughter of John McBride and Kate Connor. I have information that 'Stacy' died in Cloughjordan in 2002, and that one of her daughters married a man by the name of Toughy. 

Kate Connor was the daughter of Joseph Connor and Elizabeth Salmon, sister of my great-great-grandmother Eleanor Salmon Keyes.

Do you have any other information on Patrick Sheppard.  There were a couple of them.  I think I know which one you mean, but do you have any other information on him? 

My grandfather was Patrick Sheppard, he was married twice.   As far as I know his first wife wasn't named Anastasia.   His nephew was also Patrick.
