Hi I'm researching the Power family of Carrickbeg and have come across the deaths of an Ellen Power (wife of a farmer) on  7/4/1885 and of John Power (Farmer) on 13/12/1895, both are recorded in the Carrick on suir Register for the Parish of Ratgormack, (which is close to Carrickbeg) and both entries show the place of residence as being Graigaralla.  I have been unable to find a place of this name, does anyone have any knowldege of it?   Or could it have been the name of the Farm? Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks Seán Power

  • I believe the townloand mentioned on the death for Ellen is Graigavalla - the 'v' is a little unclear, compare to the 'r'  in other example on the page - quite different.

Graigavalla is a townland in Rathgormuck civil parish, Co. Waterford see the entry on the placename database

p.s. he Rathgormuck reference on this death register is to the civil registration sub-district, also known as a dispensary district.

  • Many thanks to all that replied, thats been very helpful, i should be getting used to miss spellings and varaitions by now but they still catch me out!   As you may have noticed in my earlier postings i have been trying tfor a long time to trace the marriage of  Joannis Power to Ellen ?Ratch/Rochford circa 1840, their son (Edmond - my Great Grandfather) was baptised 25/12/1845 in carrickbeg, but i have been unable to find their marriage record in Carrick on suir/ Carrickbeg. . As i have not been having a lot of luck i have widened my search by looking at death records, ages  and then trying to work backwards in the hope some more info might surface, the ages of the John and Ellen from Graigavalla looked about right and the records were recorded in Carrick on suir.  I was hoping that their farm might have been close to the Waterford rd (as Edmund later leased land on the Waterford / Yellow Rd in Carrickbeg) as this might have been be another positive clue, but looking at the Griffiths val. maps it looks to have been several miles away, so its not looking good. That said i will now look for a marriage in the Rathgormack area.   Thanks again for all the help and hope you all have a happy and safe 2022.  Seán

  • Sean,

Subscription site  www.rootsireland.ie   has a record of an Edmund Power being baptised in Carrick Beg on December 25th 1843. Father: John Power - Mother: Ellen Ratch. Baptismal Sponsors: James Brown and Mary Hearn. Unable to read the copy of the parish regfister, due to its battered condition.

There is a record of a John Power being baptised in Carrick Beg on November 29th 1845. Father: John Power - Mother: Ellen Rochford. Baptismal Sponsors: Thomas Keating and Ellen Terry.

There is also the marriage of a John Rochford in Carrick Beg in 1842. Wife: Anastasia Daniel.

An Edmund Power baptised in Portlaw on August 12th 1843. Father: John Power Mother: Ellen Hurly - Baptismal Sponsors: John Murry and Mary Kernan.

No record found for the marriage of John and Ellen Rochford.  A number of families in Carrick-on-Suir were named "Rochford". Perhaps you might check if any of those families married a "Power".

    Regards,

    McCoy
