Hi

My 3rd great grandparents Denis Whalon/Wealon/Whalen and Margaret Donnelon were from and married in Ballinasloe, Galway and at one point must have moved to Graigueawoneen where some of their children were baptized.  We are hoping to visit Ireland in May 2026 and are hoping to visit the areas where my different ancestors were from.  We will stop in Ballinasloe (what should we see here?  I believe the RC church is the site of an older church where they may have married/baptized). but wondered what is in Graigueawoneen?  I can't seem to find anything on maps.  Would it be worth a visit? (that day might be a long day, so I don't want to make the extra stop if there there is nothing there any longer). thanks

  • You can see Graigueawoneen on Google Earth (which is free to download).  Just put "Graigueawoneen, Galway, Ireland" into the search box.  From the air, it seems to be a vary rural place (almost no buildings - just a few houses to the west of it) about a mile south of Ballinasloe, so possibly not much to see, but it's right near the exit off of the M6 which you'll take for Ballinasloe anyway, so not much out of your way.
