My Grandmother, Margaret Bernadette Moran was born in Milltownpass in 1945, her teacher at school was Tim McAuliffe, the notable Irish Senator.
She said he was a very strict teacher, she remembers one time she was asked to work out a Maths sum, and when she got the answer correct someone accused her of cheating, my grandma said she refuses to admit to something if she's not done it, so she denied it, Timothy decided she was lying and sent her out to find a stick so he could cane her, she said he hit her hand so hard it drew blood, when she went home she told her dad and he stormed into the school the next day, grabbed him by the scruff of the shirt and told him "If you ever draw blood from any of my kids again, it'll be coming from your neck" ....she said she got in trouble after that for snitching on him to her dad!
Then she had a brother named Noel that was born with health issues related to his lungs, apparently one day Timothy nudged him into the blackboard, grandma snitched to her dad once again and again he marched down to the school to complain, and again my grandma got in trouble for telling her dad
She also remembers the classroom being very cold, and he would stand with is back to the fireplace to warm himself whilst the kids were all left frozen.
My grandma also mentioned that the school only had 2 classes, one for 4-7 year olds and the other for 8-16 year olds... she said it was very unfair as the 8 year olds had to learn the same things as the older kids that had been in the class for years
