In the last month or so I applied through the GRO for my grandparents birth certificates from the years 1892 and 1894. First I received an email from the records office in Dublin informing me that they do not handle those records and to contact the Roscommon office. I refile and re apply and send in the new application and fees. About two weeks I heard fromthr Roscommon office telling me that my grandmothers birth certificate could not be done due to the separation in 1921, all well and good but on the forms I indicated that my Grandmother was born in Kilkeel County Down on 4, April 1894 when Ireland was one. I never heard about my Grandfather who was born in Sligo in 1894. I don't know if they could not read the typed application or just didn't want to be bothered on completing the work. I am looking to obtain Irish Citizenship through my mother's parents. I do have a copy of Catherine Hugh's birth certificate that he brother that remained in Ireland was able to obtain it in the Republic in 1945. What gives and how can I correct this. By the way, my grandmother Catherine Hughes is easily found in the Irish census for 1901 and 1911, so is my grandfather who is listed as Willie Keane in the census from 1911. They both emigrated years before 1916 and the Irish War for Independence. Can Someone attempt to help me out.

Thanks

    Danny,

Attached is a copy of the birth certificate of a Catherine Hughes in Kilkeel in1894. To apply for Irish citizenship the certificate has to certified. This may be the reason, but it should not be so.

  • Danny,

You will need certified copies (ie not photocopies) to apply for citizenship.

As far as the 1894 Kilkeel birth, and any post 1922 births in Northenr Ireland are concerned I would simply order from GRONI in Belfast. (They are slightly cheaper than GRO Roscommon anyway £15 vs €20).

GRONI is the only repository for birth, death and marriage records in what is now Northern Ireland, from 1.1.1922 onwards.

Births in Northern Ireland within the past 100 years, marriages within the past 75 and deaths within the past 50 aren’t searchable on-line. They are open to the public, just not on-line. If you know all the key details eg exact date and place of birth, parents names etc, you can order a copy of a certificate from GRONI for £15 (sterling). https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

But if you don’t have all the information, you need to get in touch with them to get a search done.  They will do a 5 year search for £7 and if they find a matching certificate you can purchase it for £8, coming to a total of £15. It will be posted to you a few days later. You pay over the phone using a credit card. You type your number in on the phone keypad. They don’t know what it is.  They won’t deal with these searches and orders by e-mail or post because they need you to type the credit card number in yourself.

  • Danny, my nephew has applied for a Passport via his grandparents.
Follow this Link........go to Civil records and enter Catherine's information that McCoy has sent.
Follow to where you can obtain an official certificate.
Then the same for William .....
    This is Williams record
    1855616.pdf (irishgenealogy.ie)
I don't know how long it will take.
Welcome to Irish Genealogy - Irish Genealogy

You will also need their Marriage Certificate.

After two years my nephew's passport is not processed, he was told it can take some time.
    Good Luck

  • Danny:

You received great advice from McCoy, Elwyn and Margot. You only need to claim foreign born citizenship through one grandparent. It may be more efficient to focus on William Kane (Keane). As Margot mentioned there is a significant backlog in processing these requests.
